Arturo Del Castillo was one of the greatest masters of Argentinian comic strip. His artistic skill is recognised internationally and his work on The Three Musketeers, The Man in the Iron Mask, and The King's Musketeers (all included here) is regarded as some of the finest pen and ink work ever created for comic strips. In August 1914 much of Europe was pitched into a war which would eclipse all others in terms of its industrialised ferocity. In an era where photography and film recording were still in their infancy, much of the news was relayed through the work of reportage artists. Pre-eminent amongst such artists was Fortunino Matania who was The Sphere's artist-on-the-spot for events ranging from coronations to colliery disasters. Sent to a variety of fronts to cover the conflict, his illustrations created a gripping and, at times, life-affirming testimony to those traumatic times. For the first time ever, this book collects those images in large format so that they can be viewed as they were intended. OVER 150 paintings and drawings on the World War 1 conflict, depicting all its horrors and special moments. His work inspired many contemporary artists: Annigoni and Russell Flint both visited his studio, and many comic strip artists collected his work including Al Williamson, Roy Krenkel, Frank Frazetta, John Bolton, Bernie Wrightson as well as film directors such as Cecil B DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock. In the 1950s and 1960s SF comic strips were hugely popular in British weekly comics. The most popular being Dan Dare in the Eagle, Captain Condor in The Lion and Jet-Ace Logan in The Comet. Jet-Ace Logan first appeared in The Comet #426 (September 1956) with art by Geoff Campion who drew the first 3 stories. John Gillatt took over the art from issue 474 and continued honing his brilliant pen and ink artwork until the last issue of Comet in October 1959 by which time his artwork had become some of the finest and exciting comic strip art in British comics.
