John M. Burns was one of Britain's, if not the world's, finest continuity artists. In a career spanning over 60 years, he produced vast amounts of work for numerous British weeklies including TV Express, The Hotspur, Boys' World, Diana, Wham!, Lady Penelope, TV Action, Look-in, 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine as well as working for publishers in Europe and the USA. Although always in demand, John found time between his numerous long term work commitments to help John Dakin in his quest to revive the British newspaper comic strip. Unfortunately this revitalisation never happened, but over a 15 year period, both Johns created characters, strips and full color pages that, until now have barely been seen by the public. Frank Bellamy is an artist whose work reflects much of the century that he inhabited. Born a year before the end of the First World War, his art documented an age of conflict, exploration, technological advancement, social change and an age which could envisage worlds as yet undiscovered as well as worlds long departed deep beneath the sands of time. His story follows the course of many of his contemporaries, a driven determination to secure a living as a illustrator, bolstered by sporadic exposure to art tuition, stints in a provincial studio 'learning on the job', and the 'pilgrimage to London' and more specifically Fleet Street, which in the 1950s was a veritable Mecca for aspiring illustrators. What makes Bellamy's story so particular is his development into a pre-eminent graphic artist creating strips such as Robin Hood, King Arthur, Heros the Spartan, Fraser of Africa, Montgomery, The Happy Warrior, Thunderbirds and Garth. From a relatively staid and unremarkable (yet highly competent) artist to a ground-breaking master of the comic strip, his rise to fame presents not just a fascinating tale about his life and work but also the story of UK comics from what was a golden age through to the influencing of the next generation of comic artists-and creatives in other fields-who would succeed him. Bob Fingerman is an indie cartoonist who Harvey Kurtzman discovered amongst his students and realised here was someone who actually knew how to draw! Fingerman has worked for just-about every major and minor comics and magazine publication in the US, and while artists like Dan Clowes and Peter Bagge achieved greater visibility, Fingerman's work is of equal merit. Hans Kresse was one of the greatest comic strip artists you have never heard of, coming all the way from The Netherlands. It's a shame that nobody remembers him anymore. Although he was published all over the world-it was during the 1950s and 1960s-and that might be why nobody remembers him anymore, as comics once read back then were trashed afterwards and nobody gave a hoot as to who the artists were (although Kresse worked until the 1990s).
