In August 1914 much of Europe was pitched into a war which would eclipse all others in terms of its industrialised ferocity. In an era where photography and film recording were still in their infancy, much of the news was relayed through the work of reportage artists. Pre-eminent amongst such artists was Fortunino Matania who was The Sphere's artist-on-the-spot for events ranging from coronations to colliery disasters. Sent to a variety of fronts to cover the conflict, his illustrations created a gripping and, at times, life-affirming testimony to those traumatic times. For the first time ever, this book collects those images in large format so that they can be viewed as they were intended. OVER 150 paintings and drawings on the World War 1 conflict, depicting all its horrors and special moments. His work inspired many contemporary artists: Annigoni and Russell Flint both visited his studio, and many comic strip artists collected his work including Al Williamson, Roy Krenkel, Frank Frazetta, John Bolton, Bernie Wrightson as well as film directors such as Cecil B DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock. (W) Peter Meriton (A) David Wright. In the early 1950s David Wright made an unusual career move for a successful commercial and pinup artist – he turned to comics. An early product of his new direction was the strip Judy, which he began in 1953 with John Hunter (writing as Peter Meriton) providing scripts. Judy is a standard adventure strip for the time – a young, beautiful girl is thrust into danger with her partner, Ricky, and their treasure-hunting adventures take them to exotic locales all over the world in a series of loosely-plotted melodramas. Judy is not quite Carol Day, due to weaker plots and cardboard characters, but maintains a strong appeal because of the art and its adventure premise, and it was a great vehicle for Wright’s beautiful cheesecake panels. In our view, it’s a minor gem by one of the greatest strip artists to practice the art and is well worth fans’ attention. Although originally printed in black and white, the source tearsheets are scanned and printed in full colour to help reflect the original artwork. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
