A tale of three marshmallowy creatures named Bone, adrift in a world of humans, monsters and fantasy creatures, Bone has since been translated into 15 languages and won Smith countless awards. Bone and Beyond is the first volume to offer an overview of Smith's work. Published in conjunction with the Wexner Center and Cartoon Research Library's 2008 exhibition, this catalogue presents work featured in the show, including examples of Smith's original drawings for Bone, plus the more recent Shazam and Rasl. Also featured are selected works by cartoonists who have influenced Smith, such as George Herriman, Charles Schulz, and Walt Kelly, and essays by comic book and fantasy author Neil Gaiman, comic book artist and scholar Scott McCloud and Wexner Center film/video curator David Filipi, the exhibition's co-curator. The secret origin of Jeff Smith's BONE Comes to Light! Cartoon Books presents THORN: The Complete Proto-BONE College Strips from 1982 to 1986, and Other Early Drawings, reprinting the entire run of his earliest rendering of Jeff Smith's world-famous BONE characters for the first time. These comic strips reveal an early version of BONE called THORN that was written for a college audience in the 1980s. THORN appeared in the pages of The Ohio State University's student newspaper The Lantern. A few were reprinted in a self-published 1983 book called THORN: Tales from The Lantern. Another small selection was published in 2008's limited edition fundraiser for OSU's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum called Before BONE. There has never been an official, complete run published until now.
