Conundrum Press was created in 1996 in post-referendum Montreal by Andy Brown, to give voice to the under-represented working in the underground anglo cultural milieu. To celebrate twenty years in operation he asked one author or artist for each year of the press who had a book out that year to contribute something new, something that represented Conundrum. So in the end twenty Conundrumites represent twenty years, hence 20x20. New comics by Joe Ollmann, Dakota McFadzean, David Collier, and many others. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(W/A) Jimmy Beaulieu Jimmy Beaulieu is the founder of the publishing house M?canique G?n?rale, and Suddenly Something Happened is his first book in English, forming the definitive edition of this autobiographical work. Told in richly rendered pencil lines in front of masterfully drawn backdrops portraying Quebec's urban and rural landscapes, these are the complete non-adventures of Jimmy Beaulieu, an easygoing artist with an appreciation for the finer things in life, such as the balconies of Montreal in spring time and station wagons with fake wood paneling. (W/A) David Collier Since publishing his first story in R. Crumb's Weirdo magazine, David Collier has been known for his thoughtful comic essays. Chimo is an account of Collier's decision to re-enlist in the Canadian army and go through basic training again at age 40, leaving his new family behind. He intends to get to Afghanistan and follow in the footsteps of artists who produced a body of work while serving in the Canadian War Artists Program. It is a poignant account of aging and mortality but, in true Collier fashion, digresses into scenes of jumping rope and the story of his childhood hero, skier 'Jackrabbit' Johannsen. On a typical autumn afternoon, Martha hosts a group of middle-aged women at her suburban home. The day takes a sudden turn when Elisabeth, an estranged friend, turns up unexpectedly-and she isn't the only unwanted guest at the tea party. Martha's sister, Maureen, shows up after years of radio silence, along some painful memories and a lot of confusion. Martha disappears after a simple trip to the backyard for herbs. Martha is the most beloved of the women--but will any of the others be able to look past their own problems long enough to search for her? A satirical portrayal of feminine archetypes in the social landscape of the 60s, Weeding is inspired by soap operas that use unexplained disappearances and repetitive character reanimations to liven up otherwise uneventful plot lines. As a verb, 'weeding' means 'to remove an inferior or unwanted component of a group or collection.' In Weeding, Geneviève Lebleu takes this definition to the extreme with a fable about social exclusion in a world where women turn against one another. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Growing up in Haines Junction, YT, artist Cole Pauls performed in a traditional song and dance group called the Dakwäkãda Dancers. During that time, Pauls encountered the ancestral language of Southern Tutchone. Driven by a desire to help revitalize the language, he created Dakwäkãda Warriors, a bilingual comic about two earth protectors saving the world from evil pioneers and cyborg sasquatches. Pauls' Elders supported him throughout the creation process by offering consultation and translation. The resulting work is a whimsical young adult graphic novel that offers an accessible allegory of colonialism. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The first graphic novel from a founding father of the Quebec comix underground. A poignant account of an alcoholic father who drags his family into misfortune, The Vagabond Valise is the heart-breaking autobiographical story of Siris, represented by his chicken-headed alter ego. Siris paints a sincere and poetic portrait of a troubled childhood spent in and out of foster homes, and the working-class, post-war Quebec where it took place. Winner of the Quebec Graphic Novel of the Year. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A punk-rock celebration of pizza in all its gooey glory. Dive deep into the world of cheese-loving, crust-craving, sauce-savouring punks with award-winning cartoonist Cole Pauls. In Pizza Punks, Pauls pushes the limits of pizza devotion by exploring just how far an extremely dedicated punk might go to attain the cheesiest of pies. Backpack pizza? Sure. Couch pizza? Absolutely. Even Mosh pizza isn't off-limits. Pineapple pizza, though? That's a little more controversial. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

It all begins with a relationship update on social media. Summer vacation is about to begin, and Simon discovers the change just as his supposed girlfriend leaves to spend two months in a seaside village. Determined to find out what went wrong, Simon decides to hitchhike 350 miles to find her. With just his backpack and a few snacks, he sneaks out of the house and hits the road but he quickly discovers that he isn't quite prepared for the journey. But that's only half the story. Unaware of the miscommunication, Louise is dealing with social challenges of her own. This is a story about two people in love and the chaos that happens when technology gets in the way. Through a series of vignettes, Shelterbelts explores the perspectives, experiences and limitations of a wide range of characters who find themselves increasingly at odds with their surroundings. When a non-denominational megachurch opens on the edges of a rural Mennonite community, a quiet-but longstanding-battle begins to reveal itself. For years, the traditionalists in the community have held fast to the values and beliefs they grew up with, while other community members have begun raising important questions about LGBTQ+ inclusion, Indigenous land rights, and the Mennonite legacy of pacifism. Artist Jonathan Dyck depicts a close-knit community in the midst of defining its future as it reckons with its past. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Dave's on the verge of summer vacation and change is on the horizon. Developers have begun digging up a field on the edges of Dave's small town, presenting endless nooks and crannies for Dave and his fearless friend Edward to explore. Over the course of the summer, while the town's adults remain focused on their fractured marriages and neighborly resentments, the children are allowed to run wild in the field, collecting caterpillars and tadpoles, catching field mice (which they smuggle home), and nursing a curious fascination with Dave's mother's matches and their potential for disaster. As the summer meanders on, Edward brings a new friend into the circle. But John's got a mean streak that's strong enough to flip Dave's world-and his place in it-upside down. Dave Lapp examines a time when kids stayed out until the streetlights came onexposes the dangers, foibles, and wildness of childhood in the 1970s. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Powered by an expressive black and white drawing style, reminiscent of Robert Crumb and the meticulous pointillist technique of Drew Friedman, the dark undertone of Nina Bunjevac's humor brings into light the range of socio-political issues her comics deal with, such as gender, nationalism or urban alienation, always from an ironic feminist perspective. Her chain-smoking, slightly alcoholic and manically depressed character Zorka may just be today's ultimate antiheroine. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The North, or at least the idea of it, has slowly made its way back to our consciousness, a notion that the North is synonymous with a lawless, rugged freedom. When Alison McCreesh moved to Yellowknife she quickly fell in love with the quirky ways it seemed possible to live up North. Part travelogue, part comic book, part love story, and part guide to the North and its quirky inhabitants Ramshackle spans her first summer north of 60. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The New York photographer Weegee was known for staging crime scenes before the police showed up, altering a body position if it resulted in a better picture. His street photographs made him world famous. This graphic biography succeeds beautifully in capturing the contrasts in Weegee's life in pictures. The style in which Mannaert has drawn Weegee's hectic life is a perfect fit. His distinctive drawings have been compared to Will Eisner and create the impression that you're walking with Weegee through New York's iconic Lower East Side of eighty years ago. In his debut book Sean Karemaker presents stories of his wild British Columbia country childhood contrasted with his downtown Vancouver bus riding adventures. In between are stories of small town parties, drawing in cafés, school misfits, scrolls, street people of all kinds, and winding through it all are the ghosts, both known and unknown. Karemaker has a distinct panelless style of comics in which the narrative and art blend seamlessly. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
