Through a series of vignettes, Shelterbelts explores the perspectives, experiences and limitations of a wide range of characters who find themselves increasingly at odds with their surroundings. When a non-denominational megachurch opens on the edges of a rural Mennonite community, a quiet-but longstanding-battle begins to reveal itself. For years, the traditionalists in the community have held fast to the values and beliefs they grew up with, while other community members have begun raising important questions about LGBTQ+ inclusion, Indigenous land rights, and the Mennonite legacy of pacifism. Artist Jonathan Dyck depicts a close-knit community in the midst of defining its future as it reckons with its past. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A companion piece to Drop-in, Lapp's critically-acclaimed account of working in inner city Toronto drop-in centres, but People Around Here takes it to the streets! Always the consummate observer, Lapp's ability to crystallize everyday moments of street life and overheard conversations into short visual vignettes is remarkable. Drop-in was nominated for a Doug Wright Award, an Ignatz Award, and was excerpted in the 2010 edition of The Best American Comics. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Dave Lapp Similar in tone to the legendary comic series Duplex Planet, Lapp's first graphic novel is a collection of stories about his work as an art teacher in an inner city Toronto youth drop-in center. His students are full of stories which they eagerly share. These include a family who picks worms at night on their knees, Vietnamese refugees, rope-jumping girls, Venus flytraps, bullies and tamagotchis. With a warmth of line and a uniquely charming storytelling style, Lapp's comics evoke the work of Chester Brown, and his black humor that of Joe Ollmann. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Olive's post-secondary education isn't what they'd planned. Instead of college, they spend five days a week, eight hours a day at what Olive calls 'Food School': a full-time outpatient program for eating disorder recovery where they learn, talk, and cry about eating disorders as part of a survivor support group. Intensely committed to recovery, Olive confronts the secretive, self-destructive, and sometimes tragically comedic nature of their illness, while struggling with the complexities of modern mental health care. With support and perspective from their roommate, a fellow patient, and their partner, Olive learns to open up about their abusive relationship with food and exercise-and finds ways to cope with the reality of living in a society that actively encourages disordered eating.
