Hark! A Vagrant is an uproarious romp through history and literature seen through the sharp, contemporary lens of New Yorker cartoonist and comics-sensation Kate Beaton. No era nor tome is left unscathed as Beaton rightly skewers the Western World's revolutionaries, leaders, sycophants, and suffragists while equally honing her wit on the hapless heroes, heroines, and villains of the best-loved fiction. In just four years, Beaton has taken the comics world by storm with her non sequiturs, cheeky comebacks, and irreverent punch lines. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Ida B. Wells, the Black Prince, and Benito Juárez burst off the pages of Step Aside, Pops: A Hark! A Vagrant Collection. Kate Beaton's second D+Q book brings her hysterically funny gaze to bear on these and even more historical, literary, and contemporary figures. Irreverently funny and carefully researched, no target is safe from Beaton's incisive wit in these satirical strips. Beaton returns with a refined pen, ready to make jokes at the expense of hunks, army generals, scientists, and Canadians in equal measure. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Aya: Love in Yop City comprises the final three chapters of the Aya story, episodes never before seen in English. Aya is a lighthearted story about life in the Ivory Coast during the 1970s, a particularly thriving and wealthy time in the country's history. This second volume of the complete Aya includes unique appendices - recipes, guides to understanding Ivorian slang, street sketches, and concluding remarks from Marguerite Abouet explaining history and social milieu. Inspired by Abouet's childhood, the series has received praise for offering relief from the disaster-struck focus of most stories set in Africa. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Nominated for the Man Booker Prize! When Sabrina disappears, an airman in the U.S. Air Force is drawn into a web of suppositions, wild theories, and outright lies. The follow-up to Nick Drnaso's LA Times Book Prize-winning Beverly, Sabrina depicts a modern world devoid of personal interaction and responsibility, where relationships are stripped of intimacy through glowing computer screens. An indictment of our modern state, Drnaso contemplates the dangers of a fake news climate. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A dark fairy tale about surviving the human experience. Beautiful Darkness is a harrowing look at the human psyche and the darkness that hides behind the routine politeness and meaningless kindness of civilized society. The sweet faces and bright leaves of Kerascoët's joyful watercolors only serve to highlight the evil that dwells beneath, as characters allow their pettiness, greed, and jealousy to take over. It a bleak allegory on the human condition; Kerascoët's and Fabien Vehlmann's work is a searing condemnation of our vast capacity for evil writ tiny. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

With its twentieth issue, one of the biggest graphic novel events of the early 21st-century is fast-approaching-the completion of Jason Lutes' epic Berlin series. Here, the inevitable antagonist of the tale of pre-WWII Germany begins to take center stage. Marthe and Kurt find their way back to each other-he, from the bottom of the bottle and she, from a one-sided relationship. Fascism creeps into every corner of society, but some can see it better than others. (immagine) Categoria: Comics

Yuna never wanted to adopt a dog. But with her partner in mourning-and in desperate need of a boost in morale-she gives in to his humble request. And in the grand tradition of reluctant pet owners, she and their puppy soon become inseparable. The young couple even goes so far as to relocate to soothe their new canine pal's anxiety. After all, there's nothing like a move to the country to set yourself right. Right? The idyll of a quiet life soon gives way to a surprising degree of antagonism, including clashes with long-time local residents of a different generation. The culture shock is palpable for all three urban transplants as the isolation of their new environs starts to sink in. They eventually adopt another dog, and still another-all while reckoning with the ups and downs of middle-age and childlessness in an unforgivingly traditional milieu. Delicate, complex drawings tell of a science-fiction world. Intelligent Sentient? feels like an artifact from another time; a lost feature in OMNI magazine, the album booklet for a late 1970s Hawkwind record, or perhaps a print version of Koyaanisqatsi. Beautiful, detailed, filigreed drawings fold in on themselves and blossom out at the reader. A loose story is told, one of a society of giant people, strange art, and inexplicable scientific experiments utilizing nonexistent technology. Factories and treehouses teem with life, and the city nestles up against a landscape filled with dinosaurs, apes, and dragonflies living peacefully side by side. Intelligent Sentient? is a series of images that tie together in progressing theme, the takeaway is that everything is connected. This book is meant to be read forward and back and returned to and treated like a mystical text. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In the middle of the night in 1997, Doctors Without Borders administrator Christophe André was kidnapped by armed men and taken away to an unknown destination in the Caucasus region. For three months, André was kept handcuffed in solitary confinement, with little to survive on and almost no contact with the outside world. Close to twenty years later, award-winning cartoonist Guy Delisle (Pyongyang, Jerusalem, Shenzhen, Burma Chronicles) recounts André's harrowing experience in Hostage, a book that attests to the power of one man's determination in the face of a hopeless situation. Marking a departure from the author's celebrated first-person travelogues, Delisle tells the story through the perspective of the titular captive, who strives to keep his mind alert as desperation starts to set in. Working in a pared down style with muted colour washes, Delisle conveys the psychological effects of solitary confinement, compelling us to ask ourselves some difficult questions regarding the repercussions of negotiating with kidnappers and what it really means to be free. Thoughtful, intense, and moving, Hostage takes a profound look at what drives our will to survive in the darkest of moments. Hostage has been translated from the French by Helge Dascher. Dascher has been translating graphic novels from French and German to English for over twenty years. A contributor to Drawn & Quarterly since the early days, her translations include acclaimed titles such as the Aya series by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie, Pyongyang by Guy Delisle, and Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann and Kerascoët. With a background in art history and history, she also translates books and exhibitions for museums in North America and Europe. She lives in Montreal. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Drawn in 1971 and 1972, these stories expand Yoshihiro Tatsumi's vocabulary for characters contextualized by themes of depravity and disorientation in twentieth-century Japan. Some of the tales focus on the devastation the country felt as a result of World War II: in one story a man devotes twenty years to preserving the memory of those killed at Hiroshima, only to discover a horrible misconception at the heart of his tribute. Tatsumi's characters muddle through isolated despair and fleeting pleasure to live out their darkly nuanced lives. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
