Chester Brown reinvents the comic book medium to create the critically acclaimed historical biography Louis Riel, winning the Harvey Awards for best writing and best graphic novel for his compelling biography the charismatic 19th-century Metis leader. Brown cooly documents with dramatic subtlety the violent rebellion on the Canadian prairie led by Riel, who some regard a martyr who died in the name freedom, while others consider him a treacherous murderer. Aline Kominsky-Crumb immediately made her mark in the Bay Area's underground comix scene with unabashedly raw, dirty, unfiltered comics chronicling the thoughts and desires of a woman coming of age in the 60's. Kominsky-Crumb traces her steps from a Beatles loving fangirl, East Village groupie, an adult grappling with her childhood, an 80s housewife and mother, to a new 30-page story Dream House that looks back on her childhood, 40 years later. Collecting comics from the 1970s through today, Love That Bunch is shockingly prescient while still being an authentic story of its era. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Blankets is the story of a young man coming of age and finding the confidence to express his creative voice. Craig Thompson's poignant graphic memoir plays out against the backdrop of a Midwestern winterscape: finely-hewn linework draws together a portrait of small town life, a rigorously fundamentalist Christian childhood, and a lonely, emotionally mixed-up adolescence. Under an engulfing blanket of snow, Craig and Raina fall in love at winter church camp, revealing to one another their struggles with faith and their dreams of escape. This groundbreaking graphic novel, winner of two Eisner and three Harvey Awards, is an eloquent portrait of adolescent yearning; first love (and first heartache); faith in crisis; and the process of moving beyond all of that. Kitaro the Vampire Slayer is the fifth volume in Shigeru Mizuki's bizarre stories about a yokai boy and his entourage of otherworldly friends. One of the most popular Kitaro tales, the title story pits Kitaro and his family against a Beatles-inspired mop-topped, guitar-playing vampire named Erit and his castle of horrors. In an unexpected twist?spoiler alert!?Kitaro meets his demise, but even death is hardly enough to keep our favorite yokai boy down. Along with the villainous vampire, Kitaro faces a trio of monsters straight from Japanese folklore. Mizuki often pulled from classic Japanese folk tales for inspiration, as shown in these three stories. A certain serpent and temple bell appear in 'The Phantom Steam Engine,' then it's onto a bird-like creature with a big beak in 'Ubume,' and Kitaro had better not look behind him when the Ushiro Gami comes to town. The four stories in this volume are collected from the late '60s golden age of Gegege no Kitaro. Appearing in English for the first time, this kid-friendly edition is translated by Mizuki-scholar Zack Davisson and includes bonus features like 'Yokai Files,' where we are introduced to Japan's folklore monsters, and the fifth installment of the 'History of Kitaro' essay by Davisson. For fans of quirky horror, Kitaro the Vampire Slayer is not one to miss! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Lynda Barry's previous book, the Eisner Award-winning What It Is, explored the question 'Do you think you can write'? Now with Picture This, Barry asks 'Why do we stop drawing?' and 'Why do we start?' It features the return of Barry's most beloved character, Marlys, and introduces a new one, the Nearsighted Monkey. Picture This is an inspirational, take home extension of Barry's traveling, continually sold out, and sought after workshop, 'Writing The Unthinkable.' (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Peter Bagge's biography of Zora Neale Hurston is bold and dazzling, a story as brilliant as the life itself. Hurston challenged the norms of what was expected of an African American woman in early 20th century society. She arrived in NYC at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, surrounded by peers such as Langston Hughes and Wallace Thurman. Hurston went on to become a noted folklorist and critically acclaimed novelist, including her most provocative work Their Eyes Were Watching God. With admiration and respect, Bagge reconstructs her vivid life in resounding full-color. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
