The Hospital Suite is a landmark work by celebrated cartoonist and small-press legend John Porcellino, an autobiographical collection detailing his struggles with illness in the 1990s and 2000s. In 1997, John needed emergency surgery to remove a benign tumor from his small intestine. In the wake of the surgery, John had numerous health complications that led to a flare-up of his preexisting tendencies toward anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The Hospital Suite is Porcellino's response to these experiences, simply told stories drawn in an honest, heart-wrenching style. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(W/A) Christian Northeast Succinctly stated and punctuated with a sharp-edged visual style, Prayer Requested presents a narrative of illustrations and collages, each one accompanied by a found or scavenged prayer. The works of Prayer Requested are inspiring, amusing, enlightening, and in some cases entirely peculiar, each marrying heartfelt intent with frank, unflattering interpretation. They represent a creativity and freedom of thought and form, cleverly depicting the intimacy, urgency, and absurdity of these found prayers with a sense of explicit surrealism. Wendy is an aspiring contemporary artist whose adventures have taken her to galleries, art openings, and parties in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Toronto. Walter Scott's sly wit and social commentary zero in on MFA culture as our hero decides to hunker down and complete a master of fine arts at the University of Hell in small-town Ontario. It is deeply funny and endlessly relatable as it shows Wendy growing up from Millennial art party girl to successful artist, friend, teacher - and Master of Art. Drawn in 1971 and 1972, these stories expand Yoshihiro Tatsumi's vocabulary for characters contextualized by themes of depravity and disorientation in twentieth-century Japan. Some of the tales focus on the devastation the country felt as a result of World War II: in one story a man devotes twenty years to preserving the memory of those killed at Hiroshima, only to discover a horrible misconception at the heart of his tribute. Tatsumi's characters muddle through isolated despair and fleeting pleasure to live out their darkly nuanced lives. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Philippe Dupuy Ten years after finishing the original French edition of Maybe Later, Philippe Dupuy set out on his own again with Haunted. Gone are the tightly constructed narratives and urbane, elegant graphics of his projects with collaborator Charles Berberian. In their place, roughed-in drawings give an urgent, spontaneous feeling to a series of hallucinatory stories and dreamlike sequences that register the raw distress of solitude and self-doubt. A jogging Dupuy runs around and sometimes through the stories of the misfit characters that haunt him: a self-amputating dog, a Left Bank artist in search of emptiness, an art-collecting duck, Lucha Libre wrestlers, and a group of single guys at the watering hole imagined as the anthropomorphic 'Forest Friends.' Heart pumping, gaze turned inward, the ground occasionally giving way beneath his feet, this alter ego concludes that sometimes you need to cross the line to figure out where it is. Kitaro and the Great Tanuki War features adventures of Shigeru Mizuki's beloved yokai boy. In the epic title story, Kitaro battles the tanuki, a Japanese animal that features prominently in the country's yokai legends. The furry beasts draw on the power of the blood moon to awaken the monstrous catfish that lives in the depths of the earth. The twisting of the catfish causes earthquakes that threaten to destroy all of Japan. With his yokai allies captured, Kitaro is the only one left who can take on the great tanuki and his army. Will he be up for the challenge? This volume contains two additional stories about traditional folklore monsters as seen through Mizuki's whimsical and genre-defining lens. In 'Mokumokuren,' Kitaro faces off against a paper screen come to life, while 'The Obebenuma Yokai' introduces a grisly swamp creature. Kitaro and the Great Tanuki War showcases the golden age of the Gegege no Kitaro series from the 1960s?and has never before appeared in English. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Gabrielle Bell Gabrielle Bell fascinatingly documents the mundane details of her below-minimum-wage, twentysomething existence in Brooklyn, New York, with a subtle humor. Her simple, unadorned drawing style, heavy narration, and biting wit chronicle transient roommates who communicate only through Post-it notes, and aspiring artists who sublet tiny rooms in leaky, greasy broken-down border-house loft apartments crawling with bugs, cats, and bad art. She fantasizes about her vision of a perfect world as she becomes the accomplished artist and world traveler she longs to be. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Renowned artist and designer Leanne Shapton has taken a century-old book and reinterpreted it in a series of bold, painted images. Shapton takes the otherwise complex objects of trees and strips them down into stark, almost abstract shapes and colors. She distills each subject into its simplest form, using vivid colors in lush gouache paint and her passion is evident in each painting. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

(W/A) Daniel Clowes Daniel Clowes creates a thoroughly engaging, complex and fascinating character study of the modern egotist, outspoken and oblivious to the world around him. Wilson, an opinionated middle-aged loner, loves his dog and possibly no one else. After his father dies, Wilson sets out to find his ex-wife with the hope of rekindling their long-dead relationship, and discovers he has a teenage daughter, born after the marriage ended and given up for adoption. Wilson eventually forces all three to reconnect as a family - a doomed mission that will surely, inevitably backfire. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Julie Morstad has long excelled at illustration, often working in tandem with children's writers, but in The Wayside, the storytelling potential of her fantastical pictures is fully realized. The work found herein combines the delicate line of Edward Gorey with the color palette of Marcel Dzama, and emerges as something utterly unique, a combination of the two with the spirit of Virginia Woolf. Dramatic, poetic, heavy with symbolism, Morstad's drawings speak for themselves, exploring femininity, identity, and personal mythologies that interested her in her first Drawn & Quarterly book, Milk Teeth. King-Cat Classix collects material from the first fifty issues of John Porcellino's King-Cat Comics as they appeared in self-published, handmade zines throughout the 1990s, now in paperback. These strips span Porcellino's dynamic evolution from saturated, punk drawings to his characteristic refined minimalism, revealing his work as nothing short of a catalyst that has inspired artists like Chris Ware in the emerging literary comics scene. In the inky drawings featuring beloved pets, awkward teenage one-night-stands, and everyday blunders, we see a nascent style steeped in truth and transparency-one that continues to ring true today. Brecht Evens, the award-winning author of The Wrong Place and The Making Of, returns with an unsettling graphic novel about a little girl and her imaginary feline companion. Geneviève Castrée has long been beloved for her mini-comics, comics, visual art, and music. There is a unique quality to all of her artistic endeavors - quiet, serene, depressing. Castrée's keen eye for detail and her fearless ability to probe the depths of her troubled past make Susceptible a stirring portrait of an artist coming into her own. Susceptible is the story of Goglu, a daydreamer growing up in Quebec in the '80s and '90s with a single mother. From a skillful artist comes a moving, beautiful story about families, loss, and growing up. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
