What happens when a childhood hobby grows into a lifelong career? The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist, Adrian Tomine's funniest and most revealing foray into autobiography, offers an array of unexpected answers. When a sudden medical incident lands Tomine in the emergency room, he begins to question if it was really all worthwhile: despite the accolades and opportunities of a seemingly charmed career, it's the gaffes, humiliations, slights, and insults he's experienced (or caused) within the industry that loom largest in his memory. While Tomine mines his conflicted relationship with comics and comics culture, a richer emotional story emerges as his memories are delineated in excruciatingly hilarious detail. R. Sikoryak is famous for taking classic comics and mashing them with famous literature as he did in Masterpiece Comics. In these uncertain times, cartoonist R. Sikoryak draws upon the power of comics and satire to frame President Trump and his controversial declarations as the words and actions of the most notable villains and antagonists in comic book history. Reimagining the most famous comic covers, Sikoryak transforms Wonder Woman into Nasty Woman; Tubby Tompkins into Trump; Black Panther into the Black Voter; the Fantastic Four into the Hombres Fantasticos and Trump into Magneto fighting the Ex-Men. In perfect Trumpian fashion, The Unquotable Trump is a 48-page treasury annual, needlessly oversized and garishly colored; a throw-back to the past when both Comics and America were Great. This new paperback edition of Daniel Clowes' modern classic celebrates the Alexander Payne-produced film version starring Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern. One of the leading cartoonists of our time creates a thoroughly engaging, complex, and fascinating portrait of the modern egoist-outspoken and oblivious to the world around him. Working in a single-page-gag format and drawing in a spectrum of styles, the cartoonist of Ghost World, Ice Haven, and The Death-Ray gives us his funniest and most deeply affecting novel to date. Yellow Yellow is a charmingly simple story of a child whose playground is a gritty urban cityscape. With no parent in sight, the boy wanders the sidewalks to find a yellow construction hat which quickly becomes his favorite belonging; earning him many compliments from strangers on nearby stoops. Eventually the boy meets the owner of the hat and must return it, leading the child to make his own yellow hat. Yet the story comes alive via the visual feast of urban oddities that the Who Needs Donuts? cartoonist Stamaty packs in the background of this rediscovered children's classic. The second in a seven-volume series of the best of Shigeru Mizuki's Kitaro comics, designed with a kid-friendly format and price point! Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon is the second volume in the adventures of Shigeru Mizuki's bizarre yokai boy Kitaro and his gaggle of otherworldly friends. These seven stories date from the golden age of Gegege no Kitaro, when Mizuki had perfected the balance of folklore, comedy, and horror that made Kitaro one of Japan's most beloved characters. In Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon, Kitaro and his father, Medama Oyaji, face off against one of their most powerful enemies--the self-styled Yokai Supreme Commander known as Nurarihyon. Over the course of this volume, Kitaro takes on the swamp-dwelling Sawa Kozo, the mysterious Diamond Yokai, and the sea giant called Umizato, and wages a double feature of battles against the bizarre Odoro Odoro. Finally, Kitaro journeys to hell itself in the infamous and surreal story 'Hell Ride.' In addition to more than 150 pages of Mizuki's all-ages monster fun, Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon includes bonus materials: 'Yokai Files' that introduce Japan's folklore monsters and a 'History of Kitaro' essay by the translator Zack Davisson. If you found the world of yokai fascinating in The Birth of Kitaro, you will find even more to love in Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(W) Jose-Louis Bocquet, Jean-Luc Fromental (A) Stanislas Barthelemy The Adventures of Herg? is a biographical comic about the world-renowned comics artist Georges Prosper Remi, better known by his pen name, Herg?. Meticulously researched, with references to many of the Tintin albums and complete with a bibliography and mini-bios for each of the main 'characters,' the biography is appropriately drawn in Herg?'s iconic clear line style as an homage to the Tintin adventures that have commanded the attention of readers across the world and of many generations. Seven-year-old Herg? first discovered his love of drawing in 1914 when his mother gave him some crayons to stay out of trouble. He continued drawing in school when he fatefully met the editor of XXe Si?cle magazine, where Tintin first appeared. His popularity skyrocketed from the 1930s through post-WWII. Herg? was perceived by some to have aided the Nazi government in Belgium by continuing to publish Tintin in a government-sanctioned magazine, and he was briefly imprisoned in the aftermath of the war and narrowly escaped execution. Also covered are his marriage troubles in the 1950s and subsequent affair with Fanny Vlamynck, who went on to become his lifelong partner; his late career in the 1960s, as his interest in Tintin waned and he occasionally 'disappeared' for weeks at a time as he contemplated giving up his career to become a fine-arts painter; and a recounting of a humorous encounter with Andy Warhol. James Sturm's America draws a portrait of the people and their dreams that make up this country. Comprised of three chapters - 'The Revival,' 'Hundreds of Feet Below Daylight,' and 'The Golem's Mighty Swing' - the stories grow as the country grows: from pioneers searching for a place to call home to ghost towns gutted by greed and racism to the fantasies of baseball. Kitaro the Vampire Slayer is the fifth volume in Shigeru Mizuki's bizarre stories about a yokai boy and his entourage of otherworldly friends. One of the most popular Kitaro tales, the title story pits Kitaro and his family against a Beatles-inspired mop-topped, guitar-playing vampire named Erit and his castle of horrors. In an unexpected twist?spoiler alert!?Kitaro meets his demise, but even death is hardly enough to keep our favorite yokai boy down. Along with the villainous vampire, Kitaro faces a trio of monsters straight from Japanese folklore. Mizuki often pulled from classic Japanese folk tales for inspiration, as shown in these three stories. A certain serpent and temple bell appear in 'The Phantom Steam Engine,' then it's onto a bird-like creature with a big beak in 'Ubume,' and Kitaro had better not look behind him when the Ushiro Gami comes to town. The four stories in this volume are collected from the late '60s golden age of Gegege no Kitaro. Appearing in English for the first time, this kid-friendly edition is translated by Mizuki-scholar Zack Davisson and includes bonus features like 'Yokai Files,' where we are introduced to Japan's folklore monsters, and the fifth installment of the 'History of Kitaro' essay by Davisson. For fans of quirky horror, Kitaro the Vampire Slayer is not one to miss! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
