Franklin Booth: Silent Symphony is a massive, 304-page book featuring over 400 pieces that span the artist's entire career. Accompanying photos of Franklin Booth (1874-1948), his family, friends and colleagues-along with illustrations by his peers and inspirations-add nearly fifty more images. A new essay by the award-winning illustrator and professor Alice A. Carter delves into Booth's life. This biography highlights his childhood in Indiana, family life and the earliest days of his professional career, his road trips, studio life and teaching career with intimate stories and much more. Quotes of first-hand encounters with Booth by his students, friends and fellow artists also are shared. Pen-and-ink drawings cover a fifty-year span-from Booth's earliest days to his final works. These include his story illustrations for top magazines of the time, plus a diverse and rare assortment of pieces made for poems, advertisements and prints. Book illustrations completed in color as well as pen-and-ink also are featured, along with rare sketches for an unrealized project. All art was scanned and photographed from its original source material using the latest technology and has been painstakingly prepped for this publication. Franklin Booth's meticulous and unique pen technique has been revered by artists and students for the last hundred years. No one has ever been able to duplicate his style. Booth utilized his own life, philosophies and experiences as vehicles to project his thoughts to the viewer, which makes his work deeply compelling and infused with his respect for nature and art. He always listened to his own voice and developed a style that was not a natural product of his era. This allowed his work to become timeless and to continue capturing audiences today. Franklin Booth's influence can still be seen in modern comic books, fantasy illustrations, concept art and films. The magnitude of his art is made for the big screen, with his figures in epic scenes. His work has made its way through decades of shifting genres and changes in the art world and is still as immediate today as it was in the early twentieth century. -Over 365 black-and-white illustrations by Booth -Over 25 color illustrations by Booth -Over 400 total pieces by Booth -Over 20 photographs that show Booth, his family, friends or colleagues -Over 25 paintings or drawings by his peers, inspirations or other artists working during his time period -New 25,000-word biographical essay by Alice A. Carbon 2 follows its predecessor by three years, and in those years Mark Schultz's work has become something more solid, and at times almost sculptural, as he continues to refine his attempts to put to paper the visions he sees in his head. Of course there are plenty of lovely warrior women, including more in the Pulpette series, as well as portraits of his Xenozoic characters, Hannah Dundee and Jack Tenrec, negotiating dire straits. There is also sword and sorcery, ancient mythic tableaus, and otherworldly science fiction to satisfy the most diverse tastes. And there are preliminaries and rejected pieces from Storms at Sea, and, (spoiler alert) design work and character studies from Mark's new in-progress Xenozoic graphic novel. Qua hoon! The element carbon, common yet versatile, is the binder at the base of life on Earth as well as the source of the rich blacks that run through Mark Schultz's drawings. Similarly, the book Carbon binds an astonishing array of illustrative art rendered in brush and ink, graphite and carbon pencil, and it also introduces more color than ever before through the artist's increased experimentation with watercolor as an atmospheric element. Writers' and Artists' Names: Art and captions by Mark Schultz. Introduction by Fred Perry Synopsis: A compendium of illustrations charting the artistic process from conception to final creation? This fifth volume of Various Drawings showcases a generous selection of private art and commissions, along with a smattering of previously published pieces, all created by Mark Schultz over the past two years. A wealth of sketches, preliminaries, studies and finished art, this new installment will appeal to longtime fans of Mark's work, as well as those discerning souls who seek only the best examples of modern imaginative illustration to add to their personal collections. Despite being an acknowledged modern master of pencil and brush and ink, Schultz has never stopped expanding his visual vocabulary, never shied away from experimenting, never slowed in his relentless pursuit of graphic Nirvana. Nor has he forgotten his first loves and obsessions: pulp and noir-fueled dames, otherworldly SF and fantasy pinups, slavering dinosaurs and fearsome women, gleaming spaceships and alluring cosmic coeds. Schultz brings all of them-even entire worlds-to pulsing life with his pencil or brush, the slightest nimbus of tint, a revelatory breath of dry brushstroke upon the page. Herein reside Hanna Dundee of the Xenozoic age, the bravos featured in the forthcoming Storms at Sea, a glorious 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea centerfold, and stranger vistas still. About Mark Schultz Mark Schultz loves a good story, always has. His lifelong interest in the sciences and natural history led him to create the award-winning Xenozoic tales and co-create the undersea adventure SubHuman, as well as to write such non-fiction projects as The Stuff of Life, a Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA. He has illustrated a collection of Robert E. Howard's Conan of Cimmeria and the autobiography of Charles R. Knight. Currently, he is completing the visuals for his Storms at Sea novella. Using the power of the Goddess archetype in surreal, natural settings, Brad Kunkle's paintings inspire people to listen to their own inner truth. After selling out his debut solo exhibition in New York City on opening night in 2010, Brad Kunkle has become internationally known for his unique use of gold and silver leaf in contemporary oil paintings. His themes explore the shedding of dogmas inherited from previous generations, intuition and the power of feminine energies as guides for seeking enlightenment in symbiosis with the natural world. Using the power of the Goddess archetype, Kunkle's paintings inspire people to listen to their own inner truth. His imagery drowns out society's expectations and serves to enrich its viewers' state of happiness. Each work ties into the surreal moments in life when serendipitous events happen as a result of listening to ourselves. Kunkle paints the shifting illumination of gilded surfaces that serves as a visual display of its otherworldly elusiveness. Alk?m?: The Art of Brad Kunkle features over 100 paintings and a dozen studies handpicked by the artist in an oversized format. Numerous paintings include details or alternative lighting carefully photographed under the supervision of the artist. This oeuvre is more than a decade in the making. The design-along with every nuance of this book's creation-has been treated as its own art object, a collection that serves as a direct extension of the artist. This publication is the fifth collection of drawings and paintings by the illustrator and fine artist J.A.W. Cooper. It documents Cooper's personal struggle through guilt, mourning and, finally, acceptance as the artist lost and then refound a love for their craft after taking a two-year hiatus. Through imagery revolving around the cycles of life and death, seasons, joy and pain, Cooper explores the relationship between making art and an unhealthy reliance on it for self-worth and identity. Works from Cooper's 2021 solo show 'Gilt' at Gallery Nucleus, are gathered here along with some that were featured in the 2023 solo show 'Curious' at the same gallery.
