The Phantom The Best of the Sy Barry Years 1961-1994; contains twelve complete Phantom stories — nine daily continuities and three Sunday continuities — hand picked by Phantom aficionados; Finally a collection of some of the most memorable stories by master Phantom artist Sy Barry. The Phantom, referred to by comic strip historian Maurice Horn as the “granddaddy of all costumed superheroes,” was created in 1936 by Lee Falk and in 1961 Sy Barry added his superlative talents pencilling and inking the feature which took it to new heights. It should be remembered that the Ghost Who Walks came to newspapers well before the Dark Knight or Superman made their first appearances and has been acknowledged as an influence on every “masked man of mystery” since. The Phantom set the standard for action, adventure, intrigue, and romance in comic strips and comic books — it has frequently been copied but never equaled. To celebrate Sy Barry's 97the birthday as well as the end of his tenure on the daily version of the strip with Volume #36 of Hermes Press' complete reprint of the Phantom dailies (with still more to come from Sy with our reprints of his Sundays), we have collected twelve stories displaying his best work on the strip — dailies and Sundays. Collected in this deluxe volume, with special cover art created by Sy exclusively for Hermes Press are: (daily continuities) “Adventures of Lucy Cary,” 6-29-64 – 12-12-64; “The Cavelands,” 12-30-74 – 4-19-75; “Guardian of the Eastern Dark,” 4-4-77 – 8-13-77; “Tyrant of Tarakimo,” 8-15-77 – 10-29-77; “Phantom Wedding,”10-31-77; “Jungle City,” 9-18-78 – 12-18-78; “The Heirs,” 12.18.78 – 5-19-79; “Gooro's Jungle Muggers,” 11-3-80 – 4-4-81; “Tale of Rex,” 1-18-82 – 9-11-82; (Sunday continuities) “Founding of the Jungle Patrol,” 7-5-64 – 1-24-65; “The Name,” 9-9-79 – 6-1-80; and “The Third Phantom,” 8-26-84 – 2-17-85. Also included is a lengthy interview with Sy Barry, a biographical essay, and original comic art spanning Barry's career. This title is limited to 1000 copies. The First In-Depth Biography of Comic Legend Steve Ditko Endorsed by the Ditko Family The first in depth biography of comics-legend Steve Ditko, in his own works - taken from years of correspondence with author David Currie and endorsed by the Ditko family with a Foreword by Mark S. Ditko. In his Foreward Mark S. Ditko writes: I'm very happy to say that this is a really great book. David, and his correspondence with my uncle and others, uncovered and documented things that would otherwise have been left unknown or subject to complete speculation â¦if ever even considered. Note that my role in the review of this book was mainly about my uncle's personal life as we know it and not necessarily his professional career. But David clearly has a good grasp on that aspect of him. Steve Ditko was the last of a generation of American comic book artists who created powerful modern-day mythology and became among the most influential and original creators of the 20th century. He co-created Spider-Man along with Stan Lee, but walked away from the character in the 1960s just as it was gaining popularity - never to return, never to give interviews, never to attend conventions or court fame and attention. He died alone at 90, known to the comic book industry as a 'cranky recluse'. Through his history, helped by sourcing a long correspondence between Ditko and author David Currie, the stories of other artists from the same period are examined, from Jack Kirby to Wallace Wood, and how they all fell afoul of a system stacked against them. Mandrake the Magician began as a daily strip on June 11, 1934, and whether Lee Falk knew it as a sophomore at the University of Illinois, he was making history. Mandrake the Magician whisked readers to exotic locales and immersed them in extended narratives with memorable villains and a colorful support cast. The strips presented in this series of reprints feature two staple characters in addition to the master magician: Lothar and Princess Narda, ruler of the mythical European kingdom, Cockaigne. This second volume of the series presents six stories: 'Return of the Clay Camal,' 'The Slave Traders of Tygandi,' 'Mandrake in the Lost World,' 'In the Cobra's Grip,' and 'Mandrake in America.' Before Fredric Wertham and The Seduction of the Innocent (SOTI), before before the infamous Comics Code, the comic book racks at local drug stores and newsstands boasted a plethora of delights highlighted by the good girl adventures of the comic book version of Brenda Starr. These four-color wonders displayed all the finer things loved by comic book buyers: good girls, bondage, a little torture, and other delectable things, which adults thought would corrupt the morals of young and impressionable readers. Now, for the first time in over 50-years, comics fans can read and own these rare comics from another era, digitally restored to perfection and presented in an archival hardcover. This volume presents the remaining four Brenda Starr Pre-Code books, issues #9-12, and the very mod and 1960's version of Brenda drawn and scripted by Dale Messick.
