When Kenneth Johnson's science fiction miniseries V premiered in 1983, it netted more than 40 percent of the television viewing audience and went on to spawn a sequel, a weekly series, novelizations, comic books and a remake. Entertainment Weekly named the show one of the 10 best miniseries of all time. At first impression the original two-part alien invasion epic may seem a mishmash of science fiction clichés. Yet behind the laser pistols, anthropomorphic reptiles and flying saucers lies a compelling treatise on the nature of power, oppression and resistance, inspired by both classic literature and historical events. Featuring exclusive interviews with cast and crew, this book examines V's cultural impact and considers the future of the franchise. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

In the mid-20th century, Mickey Spillane was the sensation of not just mystery fiction but publishing itself. The level of sex and violence in his Mike Hammer thrillers (starting with I, The Jury in 1947) broke down long-held taboos and engendered a near hysterical critical backlash. Spillane's fiction came to the screen in a series of films that include Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and The Girl Hunters (1963) with the author himself playing his private eye. These films, and television series starring Darren McGavin and Stacy Keach respectively, are examined in a lively, knowledgeable fashion by Spillane experts. Included are cast and crew listings, brief biographical entries on key persons, and a lengthy interview with Spillane. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Marvel Studios' approach to its Cinematic Universe, beginning with the release of Iron Man (2008), has become the template for successful management of blockbuster film properties. Yet films featuring Marvel characters can be traced back to the 1940s, when the Captain America serial first appeared on the screen. This collection of new essays is the first to explore the historical, textual and cultural context of the larger cinematic Marvel universe, including serials, animated films, television movies, non-U.S. versions of Marvel characters, films that feature characters licensed by Marvel, and the contemporary Cinematic Universe as conceived by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. With actress Pam Grier's breakthrough in Coffy and Foxy Brown, women entered action, science fiction, war, westerns and martial arts films - genres that had previously been considered the domain of male protagonists. This ground-breaking cinema, however, was - and still is - viewed with ambivalence. This volume contains an in-depth critical analysis and study of the female hero in popular film from 1970 to 2006. The entrance of the female hero into films written by, produced by and made for men is viewed through the lens of feminism and post-feminism arguments. Analyzed works include films with actors Michelle Yeoh and Meiko Kaji, the Alien films, the Lara Croft franchise, Charlie's Angels, and television productions such as Xena: Warrior Princess and Alias. The Incredible Hulk is one of Marvel Comics' earliest super-heroes. Through the decades, the character and his narrative elements - the causes of Bruce Banner's transformations, the Hulk's strength, intelligence and skin color, the tone, theme and sources of conflict - have been continually reinvented to remain relevant. This collection of new essays explores Marvel's more than five decades of Hulk comics. The contributors analyze the Hulk and his supporting cast in their shifting historical contexts, offering insights into both our popular entertainment and our cultural history. Since Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, the superhero has changed with the times to remain a relevant icon of American popular culture. This collection explores the evolution of the Superman character and demonstrates how his alterations mirror historical changes in American society. These essays examine Superman's patriotic heroism during World War II, his increase in power in the early years of the Cold War, his death and resurrection at the end of the Cold War, and his recent dramatic reimagining. This volume reveals as much about America as it does about the champion of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

With storylines that often contain overt social messages within its 'mutant metaphor,' X-Men is often credited with having more depth than the average superhero property. In this collection, each essay examines a specific era of the X-Men franchise in relationship to contemporary social concerns. The essays range from an analysis of popular science at the time of the first X-Men comic book in 1963 to an interpretation of a storyline in light of rhetoric of President Obama's first presidential campaign. Dick Grayson - alter-ego of the original Robin of Batman - has gone through various changes in his 75 years as a superhero but has remained the optimistic, humorous character readers first embraced in 1940. The first scholarly work to focus exclusively on the Boy Wonder, this collection of new essays features critical analysis, as well as interviews with some of the biggest names to write Dick Grayson, including Chuck Dixon, Devin Grayson and Marv Wolfman. The contributors discuss his vital place in the Batman saga, his growth and development into an independent hero, Nightwing, and the many storyline connections which put him at the center of the DC Universe. His character is explored in the contexts of feminism, trauma, friendship and masculinity. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

by Robert Michael 'Bobb' Cotter This work provides a critical overview of monster magazines from the 1950s to the 1970s. The term 'monster magazine' is a blanket term, which, for the purposes of this study is used to describe both magazines that focus primarily on popular horror movies and magazines that contain stories featuring monsters which are illustrated in comic book style but printed in black and white. In the heroine's journey, the young woman protagonist confronts her dark side and emerges stronger. This quest is a recurring theme in comic books and their screen adaptations. Batgirl, Wonder Woman and Black Widow each find their greatest enemy is their dark mother or shadow twin - the savagery they've rejected in themselves. Supergirl, in her television incarnation, strives to restore her bonds with her sister. This book explores the popular mythos of comics heroines like Jessica Jones, Catwoman, Harley Quinn and the new superwomen of webcomics, who all endure great personal struggle or sacrifice before emerging as female warrior-saviors. Marvel Comics has a tradition of addressing relevant real-life issues facing the American public. With the publication of Civil War (2006-2007), they focused on contemporary anxieties such as terrorism and threats to privacy and other civil liberties. This collection of essays explores the Civil War series and its tie-in titles from the perspectives of history, political science, sociology, psychology, literary criticism, law, philosophy and education. The contributors provide a close reading of the series' main theme - the appropriate balance between freedom and security - and discuss how that balance affects citizenship, race, gender and identity construction in 21st-century America. In 1954, the comic book industry instituted the Comics Code, a set of self-regulatory guidelines that effectively banned genuine horror coimcs. Because the Code applied only to color comics, many artists and writers turned to black and white to circumvent the Code's confines. With the 1964 publication of Creepy #1 by Warren Publishing, black-and-white horror comics experienced a revival that continued into the early 21st century. This work offers a comprehensive history and retrospective of the black-and-white horror coimcs that flourished on the newsstands from 1964 to 2004. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror
