(E) Robert G. Weiner For more than 60 years, Captain America was one of Marvel Comics' flagship characters, representing truth, strength, liberty, and justice. This book discusses topics including the representation of Nazi Germany in comics from the 1940s to the 1960s; the creation of Captain America in light of the Jewish American experience; the relationship between Captain America and UK Marvel's Captain Britain; the groundbreaking partnership between Captain America and African-American superhero the Falcon; and the attempts made to kill the character before his 'real' death. (E) Tobias Hochscherf , James Leggott Written by international experts from a range of disciplines, these essays examine the uniquely British contribution to science fiction film and television, including Doctor Who, the Hammer Horror films, 28 Days Later, A Clockwork Orange, and many others. Viewing British SF as a cultural phenomenon that challenges straightforward definitions of genre, nationhood, authorship and media, the editors provide a conceptual introduction placing the essays within their critical context. Bill Willingham's Fables imagined the lives of fairy tale figures - Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella and the ubiquitous Prince Charming, among many others - as they made new lives for themselves in modern-day New York City. This study, the first about the sprawling, complex series, discusses such topics as Fables' status as a contemporary adaptation of folk and fairy tales; its use of conventional genres like sword-and-sorcery, crime and romance; its portrayal of social and political relationships; and its self-referential moments. The author explores how Fables portrays redemption, the function of community, and how our hopes and fears influence our ideal of 'happily ever after.' This book tackles Ian Fleming's novels as well as the 22 films of the Eon Productions series and follows the evolution of certain determining features (paradigms) from the text to the screen, to determine their function within the narration. This study reveals how the James Bond universe creates different poles of attention (narrative authority) by fusing different narrative domains (semiotic codes) that work in harmony to compose an entire narrative universe that goes beyond a mere spy adventure to become a genre in itself as well as a cultural reference. Who knew The Shadow better than his creator, Walter B. Gibson. Relatively few people have heard of Gibson, but many more are familiar with The Shadow having heard the program on the Blue Coal Radio Program in the 1930s and read the Street & Smith Shadow novels. Walter B. Gibson's life and career come out from behind The Shadow in this biography. It covers his youth in Philadelphia, his development as a writer and magician, his wives, including the third, (Litzka, who was a harpist and magician in her own right), his time living in Maine and upstate New York, and his later years and death. The worlds of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and other modern epics feature the Chosen One, an adolescent boy who defeats the Dark Lord and battles the sorrows of the world. Television's Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents a different kind of epic - the heroine's journey, not the hero's. This provocative study explores how Buffy blends 1990s girl power and the path of the warrior woman with the oldest of mythic traditions. As she sacrifices her life for the helpless, Buffy experiences the classic heroine's quest, ascending to protector and queen in this timeless metaphor for growing into adulthood. Since Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, the superhero has changed with the times to remain a relevant icon of American popular culture. This collection explores the evolution of the Superman character and demonstrates how his alterations mirror historical changes in American society. These essays examine Superman's patriotic heroism during World War II, his increase in power in the early years of the Cold War, his death and resurrection at the end of the Cold War, and his recent dramatic reimagining. This volume reveals as much about America as it does about the champion of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

In 1954, the comic book industry instituted the Comics Code, a set of self-regulatory guidelines that effectively banned genuine horror coimcs. Because the Code applied only to color comics, many artists and writers turned to black and white to circumvent the Code's confines. With the 1964 publication of Creepy #1 by Warren Publishing, black-and-white horror comics experienced a revival that continued into the early 21st century. This work offers a comprehensive history and retrospective of the black-and-white horror coimcs that flourished on the newsstands from 1964 to 2004. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

The Incredible Hulk is one of Marvel Comics' earliest super-heroes. Through the decades, the character and his narrative elements - the causes of Bruce Banner's transformations, the Hulk's strength, intelligence and skin color, the tone, theme and sources of conflict - have been continually reinvented to remain relevant. This collection of new essays explores Marvel's more than five decades of Hulk comics. The contributors analyze the Hulk and his supporting cast in their shifting historical contexts, offering insights into both our popular entertainment and our cultural history. (W) Robert Michael 'Bobb' Cotter Doc Savage is not only the prototype of the modern fictional superhero; he was also a seminal force in creating multimedia crossovers. The character exploded onto the scene in 1933, with the Great Depression and the gathering clouds of war as a cultural backdrop. The series is examined in relation to historic events and changing audience tastes, with special attention on the horror and science-fiction elements. The artwork features illustrations, covers, and original art. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Marvel Studios' approach to its Cinematic Universe, beginning with the release of Iron Man (2008), has become the template for successful management of blockbuster film properties. Yet films featuring Marvel characters can be traced back to the 1940s, when the Captain America serial first appeared on the screen. This collection of new essays is the first to explore the historical, textual and cultural context of the larger cinematic Marvel universe, including serials, animated films, television movies, non-U.S. versions of Marvel characters, films that feature characters licensed by Marvel, and the contemporary Cinematic Universe as conceived by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios.
