From a start at short-lived Atlas/Seaboard, Danny Fingeroth moved to Marvel to edit multiple Spider-Man titles; and write for Avengers, Dazzler and What If? During the 1990s, he scripted all fifty issues of Darkhawk, as well as Spider-Man’s Deadly Foes and Lethal Foes miniseries. Leaving Marvel in 1995, he became Virtual Comics’ editor in chief and then Visionary Media’s senior vice president for creative production; he has also taught comic-book writing courses at select universities. In the prose field, he has written several nonfiction books about the comic-book field, as well as children’s books on noted actors.Howard Mackie got his start at Marvel during the late 1980s as an editor and then a writer. One of his first series as full-time scribe was 1990’s massively popular Ghost Rider, which introduced the alter ego Danny Ketch to the mythos of the Spirit of Vengeance. He also wrote prolifically in the Spider-Man and X-Men titles of the ’90s.Bob Harras edited several titles as Ralph Macchio’s assistant, mostly tie-ins such as Micronauts, Rom, Saga of Crystar and U.S. 1. He subsequently became chief editor of the X-Men titles and wrote for multiple series, including a three-year run on Avengers. Graduating to editor in chief, he oversaw well-received runs of Captain America, Daredevil, Deadpool and other titles, as well as the controversial second Clone Saga in the 1990s’ Spider-Man titles. Harras has since worked as contributing editor at WildStorm and collected editions editor for DC Comics. He began a decade-long stint as DC’s editor in chief in 2010.His place in Marvel history assured when he helped introduce Deathlok in the pages of Astonishing Tales, Rich Buckler also penciled several storylines in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man — along with runs on Jungle Action’s Black Panther, Fantastic Four, Thor and other monthly titles, as well as Roy Thomas’s miniseries Saga of the Sub-Mariner and Saga of the Original Human Torch. Buckler’s 1970s DC work includes Lois Lane, Secret Society of Super-Villains and World’s Finest, as well as the groundbreaking Superman vs. Shazam. During the 1980s, he and Thomas collaborated on All-Star Squadron. He worked in the barbarian and horror genres for both Marvel and DC, illustrated Archie’s Mighty Crusaders, and contributed to black-and-white magazines for both Marvel and Warren Publishing. He was editor of the short-lived Solson Publications and wrote two books on comic-book art. After a start as inker to his older brother John, Sal Buscema penciled Captain America, Defenders, Incredible Hulk and more. Famed for his ability to meet tight deadlines, he spread his talents across multiple genres. His 1970s work ranged from Ms. Marvel and Nova to Sub-Mariner and Spider-Woman’s first appearance in Marvel Spotlight. He was the uninterrupted artist on Spectacular Spider-Man for more than a hundred issues and penciled the web-slinger’s adventures in Marvel Team-Up, in which he and writer Bill Mantlo introduced Captain Jean DeWolff. After handling more team-ups in the Thing’s Marvel Two-in-One, he reunited with brother John on Steve Englehart’s Fantastic Four. He later provided inks for Tom DeFalco’s Spider-Girl titles and Thunderstrike miniseries.Beginning as Stan Lee’s production assistant, Herb Trimpe (1939-2015) went on to pencil a seven-year run on Marvel mainstay Incredible Hulk — during which he debuted the future X-Man, Wolverine — as well as 1970s classics Marvel Team-Up, Shogun Warriors and Godzilla. He was equally prolific during the 1980s on Nick Fury, The ’Nam and G.I. Joe; the 1990s saw him illustrate Marvel’s First Family on Fantastic Four Unlimited. Trimpe’s war-story credits also include the introduction of the Phantom Eagle, the WWI aviator hero whose adventures were later chronicled by Garth Ennis.Formerly a regular artist on Solo Avengers, as well as West Coast, Mark Bright is noted for working with writer Christopher Priest on Falcon, Power Man and Iron Fist, Quantum and Woody and other titles. He has also drawn Marvel’s incarnation of G.I. Joe and several DC flagship characters in Action Comics Weekly, Batman and Green Lantern.Paul Ryan collaborated with Mark Gruenwald on Squadron Supreme, D.P. 7, Quasar and other titles. His #356-414 run on Fantastic Four is rivaled in length only by John Byrne and Jack Kirby. At DC, he penciled Batman, Flash and multiple Superman titles. He spent years penciling the Amazing Spider-Man comic strip, and penciled and inked the daily comic strip The Phantom for King Features Syndicate from 2005 until his death in 2016.The main contribution of artist and animator Rick Hoberg to Marvel Comics came in the pages of What If? He has also illustrated issues of Invaders, Star Wars and Iron Man, among others. Hoberg went on to pencil a long run on Green Arrow for DC. His extensive animation credits include Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man.Alex Saviuk established himself as a major Marvel artist with a seven-year run on Web of Spider-Man. He also worked on the animated-series tie-in Spider-Man Adventures and drew the Amazing Spider-Man comic strip from scripts by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber. At DC, he penciled and inked Flash, Green Lantern, Superman and other titles. Dwayne Turner’s early Marvel work included Avengers Spotlight and Transformers before launching the 1990s series Cage and teaming with writer Don McGregor on the limited series Black Panther: Panther’s Prey. Turner has illustrated a number of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn titles, including a lengthy run on Curse of the Spawn, and has subsequently worked extensively in the video game and film industries with credits including Tron: Legacy, The Jungle Book and the Halo franchise.Javier Saltares created a name for himself as both an inker and a pencil artist. His comics career started on New Universe titles such as Psi-Force, Justice and D.P. 7 — but in 1990, with penciler and future brother-in-law Mark Texeira, Saltares helped create the intense visual style that made Ghost Rider one of the most popular comics of the decade. In recent years, after a turn drawing G.I. Joe for Devil’s Due, Saltares returned to Marvel, re-teaming with Texeira on Wolverine and the Ghost Rider revival by writer Daniel Way.Tom Morgan started his comics career at Marvel in the mid-1980s. He contributed inks, pencils and cover art to a variety of series, including several Spider-Man and New Universe titles. Morgan next illustrated short runs on Captain America, Power Pack and Alpha Flight, along with the miniseries The War and two Excalibur special editions. During the early 1990s, Morgan landed his first long-term assignment as penciler of Punisher 2099. He went on to illustrate several Iron Man issues, an Extreme Justice arc for DC Comics and Topps Comics’ licensed miniseries Xena: Warrior Princess vs. Callisto. In 2008, Morgan illustrated IDW’s comic biography Presidential Material: Barack Obama. After stints on Warren Publishing’s Eerie and IPC’s 2000 AD, Paul Neary moved to Marvel UK as artist on the imprint’s Hulk and Nick Fury features, as well as multiple Doctor Who sagas. With then-newcomer Alan Davis, he migrated to more mainstream titles, inking Davis’ pencils on Uncanny X-Men and Captain Britain, as well as on DC’s Detective Comics. Returning to Marvel UK as editor in chief, Neary launched Death’s Head II, Motormouth, Warheads and other 1990s titles. He has since returned to art, inking Bryan Hitch’s pencils on Wildstorm’s Authority; and Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Ultimates and more.
