Edmond Baudoin has long been one of the most revered and influential figures in European comics, renowned for his slashing, expressive brushwork and narrative experimentation. NYR Comics presents the first English translation of his most intimate and accessible book, his graphic memoir of growing up with his beloved brother, Piero. Whether stuck in bed with whooping cough or out exploring in the woods, the two brothers draw together endlessly. They confront Martians, battle octopuses, stage epic battles between medieval castles, and fly high over the earth. Inevitably, they begin to grow apart, and their shared artistic life is replaced by schoolwork, romance, dances, motorcycles, and the struggle to decide what sort of people they want to be. Piero is a delicate, exuberant testament to the joys of childhood, and a bittersweet account of what it means to become an adult - and an artist. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Colonial history haunts this stunning, spectral-looking graphic novel, a spiritual sequel to the author's Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures. Yvan Alagbé continues his interrogation of race and family in modern France. The book focuses on the dream-like memories of a woman named Clare, who is spending time with her family for her grandfather's funeral. Alagbé shifts between narratives of the family, all haunted by the legacy of France's colonial subjugation of Africa. Alagbé works in stormy grayscale washes, using comics, as he puts it, as 'a sacred dimension which celebrates, questions and perpetuates life.... I believe that life is not damnation but grace.' An anonymous official chides a man under surveillance for stepping out of view of a security camera; visitors to an underground mall are forced to form a new society when a nuclear strike may (or may not) have left them as the sole survivors on Earth; newlyweds living in an authoritarian New York City attempt to navigate the insidious hurdles of being permitted to have a child; and a Puerto Rican boxer discovers that segregation continues in America long after death. In this collection of three novellas, Wonder City, Shelter, and 1996, published together in English for the first time, Chantal Montellier's blend of dark humor, gripping storytelling, and consistent focus on the perils of totalitarianism, shows her to be a master of both comics and science fiction. Michael McMillan has said he's 'not really a cartoonist,' but the evidence suggests otherwise. Born and raised in California, he studied architecture and design before a visit in 1969 to an exhibition of Chicago's Hairy Who and encounters with the bourgeoning San Francisco underground comix scene convinced McMillan to make his own comics. He plunged in, drawing for legendary publications like Weirdo, Young Lust, Lemme Out Here, Arcade, and eventually his own one-issue wonder, Terminal. Over the following decades, McMillian kept playing with the form of comics. He reimagined the kind of stories single-panel, two-panel, and many-panel strips could tell, blending favorite genres from his childhood (horror, swords and sandals, science fiction) with more mature themes (autobiography, dating, sex) into new and striking forms. McMillan's comics are collected here for the first time, alongside a selection of his electrifying sculptures, eye-popping paintings, and stunning pages from the journals he kept during his years rock climbing in California's Sierra Nevada. Ogden Whitney was one of the unsung masters of American comics. Best remembered for co-creating the satirical superhero Herbie Popnecker, Whitney's romance comics of the late 1950s and 1960s may be even more unique. In Whitney's hands, the standard formula of meet-cute, minor complications, and final blissful kiss becomes something very different: an unsettling vision of midcentury American romance as a devastating power struggle, a form of intimate psychological warfare dressed up in pearls and flannel suits. From suburban lawns and offices to rocket labs and factories, his men and women scheme and clash, dominate and escape. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Written and illustrated by one of the National Lampoon's few female contributors and never before collected in America, these hilarious, raunchy, and groundbreaking cartoons depict the social upheavals of the late twentieth century through the escapades of a young girl and her dog. In the 1970s and 1980s, National Lampoon was home not only to some of the funniest humor writing in America but also to many of its best cartoons. One of the greatest was Trots and Bonnie by Shary Flenniken, a comic strip that followed the adventures and mishaps of the guileless teenager Bonnie and her wisecracking dog, Trots. Bonnie stumbles through the mysteries of adulthood, as Flenniken, one of the few female contributors to National Lampoon, explored the harsh realities of American life. Dating, sex, politics, and violence are all confronted with fearlessness and outrageous humor, rendered in Flenniken's timeless, gorgeous artwork. After all these years, they have lost none of their power to shock and amuse. This collection, handpicked by Flenniken and with an introduction by the New Yorker cartoonist Emily Flake, is the first book of Trots and Bonnie ever published in America, a long-overdue introduction to some of the most stunning and provocative comics of the twentieth century. A haunting and darkly funny post-apocalyptic graphic novel that follows an unusual postal worker on his very bizarre mail route. In the blasted ruins of what was once a picture-perfect suburb, nothing stirs, except the postman. Clad in a hazmat suit and mounted on a bicycle, he is still delivering the mail, nuclear apocalypse or no nuclear apocalypse. One family has taken refuge in an underground fallout shelter, and to them he brings - or, rather, shouts through the air vent - a series of odd, anonymous letters. This pioneering graphic novel was created in 1981 by famed French cartoonist Gébé and has never before been available in English. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The first-ever collection of comics by Ed Subitzky-comedy writer, National Lampoon legend, Atari spokesperson, 'The Impostor' on The David Letterman Show, and an enduring influence on an entire generation of cartoonists and humorists. A cartoon that hypnotizes you. A cartoon that goes through puberty. A cartoon that covers the history of the universe in a few dozen panels. A cartoon that is a crossword puzzle. For the entire run of National Lampoon, Ed Subitzky bent, broke, and reimagined what a cartoon could do, creating some of the funniest and most lasting work of the era. In this first-ever collection of his work, Subitzky's range as a cartoonist and humorist is on full display, including not his work in television and advertising: collaborating on a humor album with John Belushi, appearing as 'The Imposter' on The David Letterman Show, and acting as a spokesperson for an Atari video game. If you were reading The Daily Worker in the 1930s, you'd have come across the words of Woody Guthrie and Richard Wright, along with the cartoons of the mysterious A. Redfield. Redfield was actually New Yorker cartoonist and future Danny and the Dinosaur author Syd Hoff. Scorning what he saw as the complicity and stale yucks of cartooning peers like Peter Arno, Hoff set his sights on the rich and powerful and revealed them for what they were: hilariously inept, deeply selfish, and incredibly dangerous. Hoff spared nothing from his pen, lampooning police brutality, thin-skinned industrialists, racists, and the looming threat of fascism at home and abroad. William Gropper was one of the great American cartoonists and illustrators of the twentieth century. A student of George Bellows and Robert Henri, he was a prolific newspaper cartoonist, WPA muralist, Guggenheim Fellow, and committed political activist. He was also a master of visual storytelling, best seen in his only full-length narrative work, Alay-Oop. First published in 1930, this lost classic of the graphic novel presents an unusual love triangle: two circus acrobats and the honey-tongued schemer who comes between them. In page after page of charming, wordless art, Gropper takes us from the big top to bustling New York streets, from a cramped tenement apartment to the shifting landscape of a dream, as his characters struggle with the conflicting demands of career, family, and romance. Soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the West German-born Katrin de Vries read a magazine featuring the drawings of the East German-born Anke Feuchtenberger. De Vries wrote to ask Feuchtenberger if she might want to collaborate, and together, they've produced some of the most striking German comics of the last thirty years, most notably W the Whore. Collected here in English for the first time, W the Whore presents the shared vision of de Vries and Feuchtenberger at its most ambitious. The titular heroine W the Whore, drawn in a shifting guise by Feuchtenberger, navigates the tedious rituals of womanhood, the unsettling mysteries of male desire, and the strangeness of motherhood, all while moving through a familiar but hostile everyday landscape of houses, factories, rail yards, and other ominous structures. Two surreal graphic novels about technology, corporatization, and alienation in the modern world by a cult-favorite comics innovator. In 1968, the British artist and writer Martin Vaughn-James emigrated to Canada. Over the next eight years, he proceeded to produce some of the most mesmerizing and inventive works in comics, light-years ahead of his contemporaries. Among them were Elephant and The Projector, linked graphic novels that guide the reader (and a bespectacled Everyman) through landscapes built out of both the everyday and the nightmarish. Jam-packed superhighways, plummeting horses, vast urban wastelands, colossal businessmen, demented cartoon animals, and interstellar oranges are just a small part of Vaughn-James's prophetic vision of society's turn away from the natural world to the artificial. Together for the first time in a single volume, designed and edited by Seth and with an introduction by Jeet Heer, Elephant and The Projector stand as a reminder that we have yet to catch up to Vaughn-James. Mark Beyer's outrageously dire, eccentrically charming black comedy is one of the great graphic novels of the Eighties, and a timelessly strange vision of urban life. Amy and Jordan are just like us: hoping for the best, even when things go from bad to worse. They are devoured by fish, beheaded by ghosts, menaced by bears, and hunted by the cops, but still they struggle on, bickering and reconciling, scraping together the rent and trying to find a decent movie. The perfect solace for anxious modern minds, courtesy of one of the great innovators of American comics. Now if only Amy's skin would grow back... (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Between the 1940s and 1980s, Chicago's Black press, The Chicago Defender to the Negro Digest to self-published pamphlets, were home to some of the best cartoonists in America. Kept out of the pages of white-owned newspapers, Black cartoonists found space to address the joys, the horrors, and the everyday realities of Black life in America. From Jay Jackson's anti-racist time travel adventure serial Bungleton Green, to Morrie Turner's radical mixed-race strip Dinky Fellas, to the afrofuturist comics of Yaoundé Onli and Turtel Onli, to National Book Award-winning novelist Charles Johnson's blistering and deeply funny gag cartoons, this is work that has for far too long been excluded and overlooked. This anthology is an essential addition to the history of American comics. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Pittsburgh is the story of a family, and a city. Frank Santoro faces a straightforward yet heart-rending reality: His parents, once high-school sweethearts, now never speak to each other-despite working in the same building. Stuck in the middle, he tries to understand. The result is this book. Using markers, pencils, scissors, and tape, with a variety of papers, drawing in vivid colors and exuberant lines, Santoro constructs a multi-generational retelling of their lives. Framed by his parents' courtship and marriage, and set amid the vital but fading neighborhood streets, the pages of Pittsburgh are filled with details both quotidian and dramatic-from his childhood mishaps to his father's trauma in Vietnam-interspersed throughout with the mute witness of the family dog, Pretzel. Pittsburgh is an extraordinary reimagining of the comics form to depict the processes of memory, and a powerful, searching account of a family taking shape, falling apart, and struggling to reinvent itself, as the city around them does the same. In a series of dazzling fragments-skipping through time, and from raw, slashing color to delicate black and white-Goblet examines the most important relationships in her life: with her partner, Guy Marc; with her daughter, Nikita; and with her parents. The result is an unnerving comedy of paternal dysfunction, an achingly ambivalent love story (with asides on Thomas Pynchon and the Beach Boys), and a searing account of childhood trauma-a dizzying, unforgettable view of a life in progress and a tour de force of the art of comics.
