When she was a little girl, passing her summers in the heat of coastal Australia, Evie Wyld was captivated by sharks - by their innate ruthlessness, stealth, and immeasurable power - and they have never released their hold on her imagination. From the award-winning author of All the Birds, Singing, here is a deeply moving graphic memoir about family, love, loss, and the irresistible forces that, like sharks, course through life unseen, ready to emerge at any moment. (W/A) Charles Burns Winner of the Eisner, Harvey, and Ignatz Awards. Suburban Seattle, the mid-1970s. A strange plague has descended upon the area's teenagers, transmitted by sexual contact. The disease is manifested in any number of ways - from the hideously grotesque to the subtle (and concealable) - but once you've got it, that's it. What unfolds isn't the expected battle to fight the plague or even to treat it. Instead, we witness the nature of high school alienation itself. Black Hole deftly explorEs a specific American cultural moment in flux and the kids who are caught in it. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

On April 1, 2020, the Instagram account of Desert Island, Brooklyn's celebrated alternative comics shop, put out a call. By then Desert Island had been shuttered indefinitely, and cities all over the world had been locked down as the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. 'We all need something positive to think about, and a lot of us have time on our hands,' the post read. 'Who wants to make something?' What happened next was nothing short of remarkable, as hundreds of short comics from more than fifty countries poured into Desert Island's inbox. Some came from notable cartoonists. Most, astonishingly, came from amateur artists just looking for an outlet to create in the midst of tragedy-for a chance to join the rescue party that leads us out of isolation. Collected in this book are more than 140 notable entries from the Rescue Party project, capturing the loneliness and the surprising comforts of early lockdown; the mania of its middle days as the mind begins to fray; and the many paths forward toward humanity's future, as we re-enter a world wracked with injustice. There is a silent epidemic in America: loneliness. Shameful to talk about and often misunderstood, loneliness is everywhere, from the most major of metropolises to the smallest of towns. In Seek You, Kristen Radtke's wide-ranging exploration of our inner lives and public selves, Radtke digs into the ways in which we attempt to feel closer to one another, and the distance that remains. Through the lenses of gender and violence, technology and art, Radtke ushers us through a history of loneliness and longing, and shares what feels impossible to share. Ranging from the invention of the laugh-track to the rise of Instagram, the bootstrap-pulling cowboy to the brutal experiments of Harry Harlow, Radtke investigates why we engage with each other, and what we risk when we turn away. With her distinctive, emotionally-charged drawings and deeply empathetic prose, Kristen Radtke masterfully shines a light on some of our most vulnerable and sublime moments, and asks how we might keep the spaces between us from splitting entirely. (W/A) Daniel Clowes Welcome to Ice Haven! 'It's not as cold here as it sounds,' declares Random Wilder, our reluctant guide to this sleepy Midwestern town. He's also its would-be poet laureate. Would-be, that is, were it not for the 'florid banalities' of his archrival, Ida Wentz, published ad nauseam in the Ice Haven Daily Progress. The lives of the men and women of Ice Haven are woven into a multilayered tale that, while it owes a debt to Our Town, is ultimately based on and inspired by . . . Leopold and Loeb. No kidding. What unfolds isn't the expected battle to fight the plague, or bring heightened awareness to it, or even to treat it. Instead, Black Hole paints a fascinating and eerie portrait of the nature of high school alienation itself - the savagery, the cruelty, the relentless anxiety and ennui, the longing for escape. As hypnotically beautiful as it is horrifying, Black Hole deftly explores a specific American cultural moment in flux and the kids who are caught in it. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
