Synopsis: QUALITY COMICS - BLACK CONDOR - CRACK COMICS #12 - #21 April 1941 - February 1942 THE RAY - SMASH COMICS #23 - #30 June 1941 - January 1942 Lou Fine was one of the most impressive and influential artists to ever work in comics. His fluid figures were admired and copied by such greats as Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked for Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold at Quality Comics along with such greats as Reed Crandall, Jack Cole and Will Eisner and in addition to his impressive covers, he worked on such comics as the Black Condor; aka Richard Grey Jr. having lost his parents was raised by giant black condors and after studying his condor foster parents, he learned to fly. He befriended a hermit monk named Father Pierre who convinced him that he should use his unique attributes to do good and so was born the Black Condor. Lou Fine also created The Ray, a reporter named Hubert 'Happy' Terrill who was covering the story of a high-flying 'strato-balloon' exploring the upper atmosphere. An electrical storm struck and while closing the outer airlock door, 'Happy' got the full brunt of the storm's energy and the unfiltered sunlight giving him his super powers to absorb energy from his surroundings and emit it from his body in any form he chose, also using it to propel himself through the air. Writers' and Artists' Names: Artists include Everett Raymond Kinstler, Joe Kubert, Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson,. Gene Colan, Bernie Krigstein, Matt Baker, George Tuska and Bob Powell Synopsis: ST. JOHN - ISSUE 3 October 1953 ISSUES 10 - 13 December 1953 to August 1954 Special Notes: St. John was a mid-sized comics publisher with a varied list of titles, and in June 1952 they joined the horror binge with two titles, Strange Terrors and Weird Horrors. Strange Terrors ended after seven issues, to be replaced by Nightmare #3, picking up from the Ziff-Davis series. However -- and I can't explain this, only report it -- they then combined the title Nightmare with the numbering from Weird Horrors, so that Weird Horrors #9 and Nightmare #3 were followed by Nightmare #10. And after Nightmare #13 the title was changed to Amazing Ghost Stories for its final three issues. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Toby Press was a small but respectable comics publisher, which also used the imprint Minoan; they put out one issue of Tales of Terror, then got hit by a cease-and-desist order from E.C., which used that title for their annuals. Toby dropped that and started over with Tales of Horror, which ran thirteen issues. Toby may be the only comics publisher to swipe the urbane and cynical stories of John Collier, rather than relying on Poe, Lovecraft, and the like. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply 'The Spirit.' The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the Golden Age of comic books. From 1940-1950, printer Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold reprinted Eisner's Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Collects The Spirit #1-4 (1944 to Spring 1946). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The covers alone in this baby are worth the price of admission - Alex Toth, Jerry Grandenetti, plus, for fans of DC's My Greatest Adventure, Ruben Moreira. Comics just don't come no better than this. Standard Comics did not believe in #1 issues. They were convinced that comics sold better if they appeared to have been around for a while, and therefore they started all their horror titles with #5, each lasting about ten issues of fairly well-done E.C. imitations. Hey, gang! This one'll go with a BANG... what with the impending end of Planet Earth in the news. Yessir! But this four-issue volume of Ace's Atomic War! comic doesn't focus on the gentle global warming path to oblivion we're all of us currently taking, but rather the big 'Hoo Boy, here comes the End of Everything!' approach we all of us figured would be the way humankind would hand in its chips, namely with mushroom clouds aplenty, bombs the size of city blocks, and floods to make Noah's problem look like he left a faucet running in the bathroom. You betcha by golly, this here's a gem of a book, comprising all four issues of Atomic War! (November 1952 to April 1953), plus the one-shot Captain Courageous from 1942 - all of 'em featuring stories and words from the likes of Ken Rice, Lou Cameron, Bill Molno, Jim McLaughlin, Chic Stone, Sol Brodsky, Harry Sahle, George Wilson and Lou Paige.
