Dick Briefer's Frankenstein for Prize Comics is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Splitting the stories between two stools-humor and horror-Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts. First appearing in comics in 1952 and on film in Columbia Pictures serial 'King of the Congo' starring Buster Crabbe. Thun'da was a fictional Tarzan-esque character scripted by Gardner Fox and originally created by artist Frank Frazetta, who left after the first issue and was replaced with Bob Powell for issue #2 who carried on the title until its demise after issue #6. Thun'da was Roger Drum, a World War II United States Air Force officer who was shot down while flying over a valley deep in the heart of Africa. He was captured by hostile ape-men but managed to escape and wandered through the valley, pushing his exercise daily to become a paragon of physical perfection with the help of Pha, the queen of the valley people, who worshipped him after he killed 'the mother of all serpents' with his last three bullets. Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the 'Golden Age' of comic books. From 1940-1950, printer Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold reprinted Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner, first individually from 1940-1947 as one of the features in 92 issues of Police Comics and from 1944-1950 as 22 issues of The Spirit. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/ criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply 'The Spirit'. The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once common place in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Toby Press was a small but respectable comics publisher, which also used the imprint Minoan; they put out one issue of Tales of Terror, then got hit by a cease-and-desist order from E.C., which used that title for their annuals (don't worry we'll bring you that particular issue later on). Toby dropped that and started over with Tales of Horror, which ran for 13 issues. Toby may be the only comics publisher to swipe the urbane and cynical stories of John Collier, rather than relying on Poe, Lovecraft, and the like.
