Synopsis: MASTER COMICS - DARK MYSTERIES VOL 1: ISSUE 1 - 6 June/July 1951 to April/May 1951 Special Notes: How can you go wrong when the first comic of a 24-book series kicks off with an eight-pager from Wallace Wood ('The Curse of the Sea Witch')?! I mean, come on, guys. Okay, so the work in these books (the first six of which are included in this first volume), is not gonna get a Pulitzer but, heck, that's more a reflection on the judges than the material. And that's only for starters. Elsewhere there are tales from Joe Orlando, Walter Johnson, Ed Goldfarb, A.C. Hollingsworth, Bill Fraccio, Lou Cameron, John D'Agostino, Tony Tallarico, Harry Harrison and Hy Fleishman and a whole host of other wacked-out-of-their-gourd luminaries. So put down that essay, Junior and flash back to when comics were . . . Well, comics, fer cryin' out loud. Go get it, kids. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This often unfairly forgotten 11-strong series (of which this volume captures the first seven issues) surely boasted some of the most magnificent covers of any of the EC wannabes of some sixty-plus years ago, despite the artists concerned being a considerable way from being 'household names.' One of these forgotten masters is Maurice Whitman; just check out the cover for #6! Plus you get EC's very own Jack Kamen regularly popping up inside. This was material that suggested unpleasantness rather than just stepped forward and pulled the old schlock-it-up lever. Collects issues #1-7 (1951 to 1953). Okay horror fans, take heed, pay attention, listen to me very carefully, Don't try to outsmart fate! Those who get too crafty often lose their heads! Be extra careful of that woman on the road - she may be a murderous vampire! For your own safety don't try to scare anyone in the home of an axe-wielding murderous old crone. And whatever you do, please don't volunteer to take part in any medical experiments and I don't know how many times we've told you this but never ever stay for the night at 'Werewolf Castle'! Dick Briefer's Frankenstein is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Splitting the stories between two stools - humor and horror - Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts. Some of the humorous material has already been reprinted, though not necessarily in order nor in total. Until now, of course! Collects issues #28-33, December 1952 to November 1954. Lou Fine was one of the most impressive and influential artists to ever work in comics. His fluid figures were admired and copied by such greats as Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked for Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold at Quality Comics, and in addition to his impressive covers, he worked on such comics as the Black Condor. Richard Grey Jr., having lost his parents, was raised by giant black condors and after studying his condor foster parents, he learned to fly. Fine also created The Ray, a reporter named Hubert 'Happy' Terrill who was covering the story of a high-flying 'strato-balloon' exploring the upper atmosphere. An electrical storm struck and while closing the outer airlock door, 'Happy' got the full brunt of the storm's energy and the unfiltered sunlight giving him his super powers to absorb energy from his surroundings and emit it from his body in any form he chose. Collects the Black Condor stories from Crack Comics #12-21 (April 1941-February 1942) and The Ray stories from Smash Comics #23-30 (June 1941-January 1942). The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply 'The Spirit.' The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the Golden Age of comic books. From 1940-1950, printer Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold reprinted Eisner's Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. This one is hard to overplay, comicbook fans in that material like the stuff contained in the handful of issues that made up the full output of Ziff Davis's Lars Of Mars is tough to beat.
