Samantha and George are about to launch into a sabbatical year in the quaint Mexican town of Oaxaca. For Samantha, the trip is a reconnection to her past and an opportunity to complete her novel; for George, it is an unsettling step into the unknown. As the couple depart for Oaxaca, a monarch butterfly begins its annual migration south from Canada to Mexico. The story of its remarkable journey, woven into the fabric of Ruins, draws striking parallels with the challenges faced by Samantha and George as they adapt to their new surroundings. Celebrated during his lifetime as much for his personality as for his paintings, Andy Warhol (1928-87) is the most famous and influential of the Pop artists, who developed the notion of 15 minutes of fame, and the idea that an artist could be as illustrious as the work he creates. This graphic novel biography offers insight into the turning point of Warhol's career and the creation of the 'Thirteen Most Wanted Men' mural for the 1964 World's Fair, when Warhol clashed with urban planner Robert Moses, architect Philip Johnson, and Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Becoming Andy Warhol showcases the moment when, by stubborn force of personality and sheer burgeoning talent, Warhol went up against the creative establishment and emerged to become one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. In 1909, while on a fundraising lecture tour in America, Sigmund Freud met Horace Frink, an early disciple of his theories of psychoanalysis, whose traumatic childhood and complicated personal life later cast a shadow over Freud's professional career - and came close to destroying his reputation. This little-known and ultimately tragic true story of two divorces, three deaths, and a ménage àquatre, as well as the questionable motives behind Freud's involvement in it, is the subject of a groundbreaking collaboration between artist and animator Lionel Richerand and the prize-winning philosopher, biographer, and novelist Pierre Péju. In 1969, humankind set foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, and Michael Collins carried the fire for all the world. Backed by the brightest minds in engineering and science, the three boarded a rocket and flew through the void, just to know that we could. In Apollo, Matt Fitch, Chris Baker, and Mike Collins unpack the urban legends, the gossip, and the speculation to reveal a remarkable true story about life, death, dreams, and the reality of humanity's greatest exploratory achievement. The dazzling, provocative work of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) would come to define the vibrant New York art scene of the late '70s and early '80s. Punk, jazz, graffiti, hip-hop: his work drew heavily on the cultural trappings of lower Manhattan. Today, Basquiat's influence can be seen not only in fine art but in fashion, design, and music. This stunning graphic novel captures the dramatic life and exhilarating times of this archetypal New York artist, covering everything from the SAMO graffiti project to his first solo show, from his relationship with Andy Warhol to the substance abuse that would cost him his life. This playful, authoritative biography shows Basquiat's work to be more important, his themes more urgent, than ever before. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A charming, heartwarming, and poignant story of running and self-acceptance, Mylo Choy's Middle Distance combines exertion and introspection in an exploration of the physical body's connection to the human experience. It explores such themes as the interrelatedness of mind and body, the Buddhism with which Mylo was raised, emotional growth through effort but also repose, and the necessity of carving out space for nuance and acceptance. Concrete narrative scenes contrast with more abstract sequences to convey Mylo's journeys, both inner and outer, and how these inextricably intertwine. The approachability of comics as a medium, coupled with the relatability of Mylo's search for self-knowledge, results in an honest, searching work of particular interest to transgender and nonbinary runners. A diverse Young Adult graphic novel about the misadventures of a down-on-his-luck teenager and the dimension-hopping, demon-battling sorcerer who just happens to be his absentee father. To make matters worse, their world is turned upside down one day with the return of their father, the Magical Mr Mantrikz, self-styled 'greatest sorcerer in the world,' and Rye now has to spend their weekends with this rude, pushy, and frankly ridiculous wizard. Paris, 1925. Over the course of a single evening, the Mississippi-born dancer Josephine Baker becomes the darling of the Roaring Twenties. Some audience members in the Theatre des Champs-Elysees are scandalised by the African American's performance in La Revue Negre, but the city's discerning cultural figures, among them Picasso and Cocteau, are enchanted by her exotic, bold and uninhibited style. When her adopted country grants her citizenship in 1939, Josephine sees her fame as a means of helping the French resistance. She takes advantage of her globe-trotting lifestyle to pass on messages and to gather information. Years later, she is awarded the Legion d'honneur by Charles de Gaulle. In the 1950s, installed in a palatial 15th century chateau, Josephine adopts 12 children from different ethnic backgrounds. Her 'Rainbow Tribe,' as she often called them, was a living, breathing symbol of a happy and harmonious multicultural society. In Josephine Baker, Catel and Bocquet paint a glorious portrait of a spirited, principled and thoroughly modern woman, capturing the heady glamour of 1920s Paris in beautifully expressive detail. This award-winning graphic biography of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) captures the prolific and eventful life of one of the world's best-loved artists. Pablo explores Picasso's early life among the bohemians of Montmartre, his turbulent relationship with artist/model Fernande Olivier, and how his art developed through friendships with poets Max Jacob and Guillaume Apollinaire, the painter Georges Braque, and his great rival Henri Matisse. Julie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie depict a career that began in poverty and reached its climax with the advent of cubism and modern art. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922. Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company. Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history. In 2011 Martin Scorsese honored this cinematic visionary, 'forgotten by the industry she had helped create,' describing her as 'a filmmaker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations.' The same can be said of Catel and Bocquet's luminous account of her life. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Herman is a reclusive, straight-laced street cleaner - or so it seems to those he works with on the city's waterfront. But he has an extraordinary hidden talent: the ability to transform his appearance at will. When the cinematic genius MIO calls an open audition for her new movie, Herman joins the audition line. As he waits, swept up in the frenzy of creative ambition that has overcome the city, his past life becomes increasingly remote. Dazzled by Herman's ability to adapt to any role, MIO deems the rest of the cast redundant. When the cult director's new film premieres, with Herman performing every role, it doesn't get the reaction she expects. Spectacularly drawn, Herman by Trade is a captivating graphic novel about art, identity, and making space for self-expression. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
