Poland, 1941. Sixteen-year-old Harry Haft is sent to Auschwitz. When he is forced to fight against other inmates for the amusement of the SS officers, Haft shows extraordinary strength and courage, and a determination to survive. As the Soviet Army advances in April 1945, he makes a daring escape from the Nazis. After negotiating the turmoil of post-War Poland, Haft immigrates to the United States and establishes himself as a professional prizefighter, remaining undefeated until he faces heavyÂÂweight champion Rocky Marciano in 1949. In The Boxer, Reinhard Kleist reveals another side to the steely Harry Haft - a man struggling to escape the memories of the fiancée he left behind in Poland. This is a powerful and moving graphic novel about love and the will to survive. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Typography confronts us everywhere: in books and newspapers, on road signs, in product packaging, and on political leaflets. Fonts spark emotions; they evoke eras and ideologies. Some, like Edward Johnson's for the London Underground, have become iconic. Others, like Comic Sans, are loathed. Each one has its own place in history. The ABC of Typography traces 3,500 years of type from Sumerian pictographs through Roman calligraphy to Gutenberg, the Bauhaus, and beyond. Brimming with insight and anecdote, this witty and well-informed graphic guide explores the historical, technological, and cultural shifts that have defined the look of the words we read. An exhilarating graphic novel about the thrill and the terror of mountaineering. In Altitude, Rochette tells the story of his formative years, as a climber and as an artist. Musician, novelist, poet, actor: Nick Cave (b. 1957) is a Renaissance man. His wide-ranging artistic output - always uncompromising, hypnotic, and intense - is defined by an extraordinary gift for storytelling. In Nick Cave: Mercy on Me, Reinhard Kleist employs a cast of characters drawn from Cave's music and writing to tell the story of a formidable artist and influencer. Kleist paints an expressive and enthralling portrait of Cave's childhood in Australia; his early years fronting The Birthday Party; the sublime highs of his success with The Bad Seeds; and the crippling lows of his battle with heroin. Kleist's graphic biography, like Cave's songs, is by turns electrifying, sentimental, morbid, and comic - but always engrossing. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In December 1913, the New York World newspaper published the first crossword in history. It appeared in their Sunday supplement, 'Fun.' A century later, this absorbing puzzle continues to attract (and infuriate) millions of devotees every day. Paolo Bacilieri's Fun transports us from turn-of-the-century New York to present-day Milan, taking in stories of ingenious puzzle makers, ardent solvers, and intellectual luminaries. Part detective story, part docudrama, and interlaced with a fiction of Bacilieri's own imagining, Fun questions the crossword's 'harmless' status. Sure, it's fun - but could it also be a form of resistance, of cryptic communication, of espionage? (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Samantha and George are about to launch into a sabbatical year in the quaint Mexican town of Oaxaca. For Samantha, the trip is a reconnection to her past and an opportunity to complete her novel; for George, it is an unsettling step into the unknown. As the couple depart for Oaxaca, a monarch butterfly begins its annual migration south from Canada to Mexico. The story of its remarkable journey, woven into the fabric of Ruins, draws striking parallels with the challenges faced by Samantha and George as they adapt to their new surroundings. Part historical narrative, part modern fiction, this book consists of two interlinked stories: The first focuses on the 18th-century painter Thomas Girtin and his relationship with his friend and rival J.M.W. Turner; the second tells the tale of three amateur artists in the present day, united by a shared interest in Girtin's art. Using this dual narrative to draw parallels between two eras of rapid technological advancement and sociopolitical turbulence, Oscar Zárate's long-awaited new graphic novel restores to modern eyes this unjustly forgotten figure, whose work has been almost entirely ignored despite his huge influence in British painting. Rebetiko refers to the fusion of West and East, Greece and Asia Minor, in music. However, to General Metaxas, it is only a reminder of the Turkish influence on his country. The ruthless Greek dictator is determined to crack down on rebetis and their way of life. A small group of friends, Rebetiko musicians all, wind their way through the Athenian backstreets, ouzeris, and market squares, dodging the police while settling disputes over hashish and women. With music at its heart, this graphic novel portrays a day in the life of the Rebetiko musicians in Athens in 1936. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In Munch, writer and artist Steffen Kverneland brings the story of one of the world's most influential painters to vivid life. This extraordinary, inventive graphic novel uses text drawn exclusively from the quotes of Edvard Munch and his contemporaries. Filled with authenticity and life, Munch debunks the familiar myth of the half-mad expressionist painter - anguished, starving, and ill-treated - and draws out his neglected sense of humor and optimism. Born out of a lifelong fascination with Munch's life and work, this is a landmark of graphic biography and the funniest, most entertaining portrait yet of a complex man and the pioneering artist behind The Scream. In his graphic biography Nick Cave: Mercy on Me, Reinhard Kleist painted an expressive and enthralling portrait of the musician, novelist, poet, and actor. It is, according to Nick Cave himself, 'a complex, chilling and completely bizarre journey into Cave World.' Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: An Art Book collects Kleist's moody and expressive portraits of the musician and his band, spanning 30 years of writing, recording, and live performance. Kleist also returns readers to Cave's imaginative world with comic book reimaginings of 'Deanna,' 'The Good Son,' and 'Stagger Lee.' Filled with visual delights, this record-size art book is a kaleidoscopic portrait of Nick Cave's wide-ranging career as a storyteller, musician, and cultural icon. In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922. Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company. Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history. In 2011 Martin Scorsese honored this cinematic visionary, 'forgotten by the industry she had helped create,' describing her as 'a filmmaker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations.' The same can be said of Catel and Bocquet's luminous account of her life. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
