A Chinese Life is an astonishing graphic novel set against the backdrop of the creation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. This distinctively drawn work chronicles the rise and reign of Chairman Mao Zedong, and his sweeping, often cataclysmic vision for the most populated country on the planet. Li Kunwu spent more than 30 years as a state artist for the Communist Party. Working with Philippe ?ti?, the artist has created a memoir of self and state, a rich, very human account of a major historical moment with contemporary consequences. Love makes the world go round. It can also turn your heart as black as coal. In the much anticipated follow up to their Eisner-nominated I Feel Machine, Julian Hanshaw and Krent Able curate a series of dystopian, satirical and psychological short fictions from artists Anya Davidson, Cat Sims, Benjamin Marra, and Kelsey Wroten that explore love's dark, twisted underbelly, and offer a much-needed tonic to everything that is sweet, cloying, and conventional. As unflinching as it is honest, I Feel Love questions the one emotion that is meant to make us feel good - but often does the exact opposite. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Twenty-eight-year-old Nao Brown, who's hafu (half Japanese, half English), is not well. She's suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and fighting violent urges to harm other people. But that's not who she really wants to be. Nao has dreams. She wants to quiet her unruly mind; she wants to get her design and illustration career off the ground; and she wants to find love, perfect love. She meets Gregory, an interesting washing-machine repairman, and Ray, an art teacher at the Buddhist Center. She begins to meditate to ease her mind and open her heart - and in doing so comes to realize that life isn't black-and-white after all; it's much more like brown. In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922. Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company. Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history. In 2011 Martin Scorsese honored this cinematic visionary, 'forgotten by the industry she had helped create,' describing her as 'a filmmaker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations.' The same can be said of Catel and Bocquet's luminous account of her life. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In the mid-1930s, Irmina, an ambitious young German, moves to London. At a cocktail party, she meets Howard Green, one of the first black students at Oxford, who, like Irmina, is working towards an independent existence. However, their relationship comes to an abrupt end when Irmina, constrained by the political situation in Hitler's Germany, is forced to return home. As war approaches and her contact with Howard is broken, it becomes clear to Irmina that prosperity will only be possible through the betrayal of her ideals. Based on a true story, this moving and perceptive graphic novel perfectly conjures the oppressive atmosphere of wartime Germany, reflecting with compassion and intelligence on the complicity that results from the choice, conscious or otherwise, to look away. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, an incident takes place in a North London park. Chris is accidentally bitten by an excited dog and aims a defensive kick at it. The owner, a well-known polemicist Ivan Grubb, takes to his blog to express his outrage, spinning the story to fit happily with his own narrative. When Ivan and Chris relate the event to their children, they are surprised and confused by the strength of feeling their reactions provoke. The Park is a delicate examination of how anger, repression, and powerlessness can overwhelm even the most logical and well-intentioned person amid the confusion of the modern world.
