by Dr. Jurgen Muller From horror to romance, noir to slapstick, adventure to tragedy, epic to musical, western to new wave, all film genres are represented in this wide-ranging and devilishly fun compendium. Metropolis? Check. Modern Times? Yep. Citizen Kane, The Seven Samurai? Of course. A Clockwork Orange? You bet. Plus The Godfather, Annie Hall, Blue Velvet, Pulp Fiction - and so many more cinematic gems. Think of this collection as a celebration of contrasts, an homage to the seventh art, a gathering of greats, and a nostalgic romp through celluloid history. Chronological entries each include a synopsis, cast/crew listings, technical information, actor/director bios, trivia, and list of awards, as well as film stills, production photos, and the original poster for each film. Up until the 20th century, children's play was not a subject that demanded much attention. While objects that entertained children have been present from ancient history, it was only with industrial mass production-and a developing urban middle class-that toys appeared more frequently. As playthings began to display a robust economic performance, an industry rose to provide this new market with the objects of their desire. European manufacturers dominated the toy market, with Germany, in particular, supplying the American market with the bulk of both singular and mass-produced products. World War I ended its dominance, and by the 1920s, bolstered by American ingenuity, an ever-growing consumer culture supported by the media empires of newspapers, radio, and television, American toys became ubiquitous in the consumer market. Ranging from the simple to the complex, children were inundated with a commodity to be wished for and sold to by the millions. From frilly dolls to science sets, children were marketed to with gusto, first through magazines and comic books and later through television. Toys fell along familiar gender lines all while being developed with the unspoken subtext of stimulating developing minds and being vehicles of problem solving with educational value. If the first part of the 20th century represented the rise of toys in America, the postwar period signaled a market unleashed by the baby boom. That one event gained traction for the toy industry and propelled it to its current state. Unforeseen was the next chapter in the industry-the advancement of the technical revolution-which would create another dimension of toy products that would captivate both children and adults as one century blended into the next. In the world of toy production, the multimillion dollar industry took the advertising of their product seriously, and toy manufacturers inundated customers with their latest product via trade journals. In New York City, the hub of the toy industry for most of the 20th century, annual trade shows introduced a deluge of new playthings to the buying public. Frisbees, board games, baseball mitts, Hula-Hoops, air rifles, video games, dolls, and miniature trains were all served up to generations of children, cementing forever the memories playtime. Filled with a Santa's sack full of surprises Toys. 100 Hundred Years of All-American Toy Ads takes us down the aisles of America's toy store delivering the favorites and forgotten memories of toys that were hugged and hoarded, saved and disposed of, and now finally brought back in their pristine glory. Once again it's Christmas, your birthday, and a reward for a job well-done. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

by Michael Ochs Record covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for - Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground. This special edition of 1000 Record Covers presents a selection of the best 60's to 90's rock album covers from music archivist, disc jockey, journalist, and ex-record publicity executive Michael Ochs's enormous private collection. Both a trip down memory lane and a study in the evolution of cover art, this is a sweeping look at an under-appreciated art form. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

From the legendary Tank Girl to live-action animations with Gorillaz, a Chinese contemporary opera to an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, artist Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic figures of contemporary pop culture. With influences ranging from hip hop to zombie slasher movies, Hewlett emerged in the mid-1990s as co-creator of the zeitgeist-defining Tank Girl comic. With then-roommate Damon Albarn, he went on to create the groundbreaking cartoon band Gorillaz. The award-winning virtual pop group of animated characters is a truly global phenomenon. Gorillaz have topped charts around the world, toured the globe from San Diego to Syria, and picked up hundreds of millions of streams and record sales along the way. Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. In 2006, he was named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a BAFTA for their animated Monkey sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2015 The Suggestionists, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London, demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett's practice. This special edition celebrating TASCHEN's 40th anniversary updates Hewlett's first major monograph with around 30 brand new pieces. The book illustrates his thrilling creative journey with more than 400 artworks from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz and up to the present day. Through stories, characters, strips, and sketches, we trace Hewlett's exceptional capacity for invention and celebrate a polymath artist who refuses to rest on his laurels, or to be pigeonholed into a particular practice. Taschen surveys Robert Crumb's career in the 6-volume Robert Crumb Sketchbook series. Each 440-page volume, the first four combining two volumes each of the limited edition set, produced directly from the original artworks now belonging to an ardent French collector, spotlights a different era of Crumb's work, providing a chronological overvue of the artist, his life and interests, and his artistic development. Volume 1 (June 1964 to Sept. 1968) includes cover roughs for the legendary Zap and Head comics, the original Keep On Truckin' sketches, the first appearance of Mr. Natural, Fritz The Cat, and more. Volume 2 (Sept. 1968 to Jan. 1975) features the introduction of Aline, the first female Yetis, San Francisco drug culture and more. Volume 3 (1975-1982) includes Crumb's move to rural California, his marriage to Aline Kominsky, and the birth of daughter Sophie. Volume 4 (1982-1989), when the artist was comfortably ensconced in rural California, fills its pages with Crumb's signature perversions (in country settings), and scathing social commentary. Volume 5 (1989-1998) finds Crumb at age 46, solidly into the midlife crises years, and the family's move to Sauve, France, in 1991 heralds a switch from portraits of apple-cheeked American girls to portraits of girls in French cafes and pastorals of rampant French countryside. Finally, Volume 6 (1998-2011) finds Crumb still illustrating sex fantasies and ranting against the human condition, but increasingly working from photos and historical themes such as the atrocity of Abu Ghraib and historic tableaus such as Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England. Crumb produced a consistent body of work over the last 40, if not 50, years, yet each page is also jarringly different from the one before. So much is packed in you can spend an hour and find you're only a quarter of the way through, with Crumb bemoaning his mortality, while continuing to prosper, every few pages. A fine stand-alone volume, and must-have completion for the sketchbook set. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

In 1935, DC Comics founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson published New Fun #1, the first comic book with all-new, all-original comic material. What began as disposable media for children was soon on its way to becoming the mythology of our time, the 20th century's answer to Atlas or Zorro. Over 40,000 comic books later, in honor of the publisher's 75th-anniversary, Taschen has produced the single most comprehensive book on DC Comics in an edition even Superman might have trouble lifting. Over 2,000 images are reproduced to bring the storylines, the characters, and their creators to vibrant life as they've never been seen before. Telling the tales behind the tomes is 35-year DC veteran Paul Levitz, whose in-depth essays trace the company's history, from its pulp origins through to the future of digital publishing.
