From running the first photostat machine at Marvel Comics to being the first to illustrate Wolverine, no other member of the Marvel Bullpen has had such a varied and remarkable career as Herb Trimpe. He's best known for his definitive eight-year stint drawing the Incredible Hulk. This book chronicles the life and art of Trimpe through his own voice, as well as the voices of friends and colleagues. Their testimony to his talent and his legacy of artwork leave no wonder why he has been dubbed 'The Incredible Herb Trimpe.' (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

For its 80th issue, the Jack Kirby Collector magazine presents a double-sized 50th anniversary examination of Kirby's magnum opus! Spanning the pages of four different comics starting in 1970 (New Gods, Forever People, Mister Miracle, and Jimmy Olsen), the sprawling 'Epic for our times' was cut short mid-stream, leaving fans wondering how Jack would've resolved the confrontation between evil Darkseid of Apokolips and his son Orion of New Genesis. This companion to that 'Fourth World' series looks back at Jack Kirby's own words, as well as those of assistants Mark Evanier and Steve Sherman, inker Mike Royer, and publisher Carmine Infantino, to determine how it came about, where it was going, and how Kirby would've ended it before it was prematurely cancelled by DC Comics! It also examines Kirby's use of gods in Thor and other strips prior to the Fourth World, how they influenced his DC epic, and affected later series like The Eternals and Captain Victory. With an overview of hundreds of Kirby's creations like Big Barda, Boom Tubes and Granny Goodness, and post-Kirby uses of his concepts, no Fourth World fan will want to miss it! Compiled, researched, and edited by John Morrow, with contributions by Jon B. Cooke. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

The mid-'80s were the age of Independent Comics. And it was also the Age of the Dinosaurs, thanks to Mark Schultz and Xenozoic Tales! Evocative of the master illustrators of the early 1900s, but with a decidedly modern flair, Schultz's artwork took off in Xenozoic Tales, and later spawned the Cadillacs & Dinosaurs cartoon and toy line. This book takes an exhaustive look into Schultz's creative process. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Don Heck remains one of the legendary names in comics, considered an “artist's artist,” respected by peers, and beloved by fans as the co-creator of Marvel Comics characters Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Black Widow, and for his long stint on Marvel Comics' team book The Avengers. He joined Atlas/Marvel Comics in 1954, and along with industry giants Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Joe Maneely, and Dick Ayers, Don became an integral player in “The Marvel Age of Comics”, drawing The X-Men, Spider-Man, Nick Fury—Agent of SHIELD, Daredevil, The Defenders, Ghost Rider, and most of Marvel's other characters. In the late 1970s he became regular artist on top-tier DC Comics titles such as Teen Titans, The Flash, Justice League of America, and Wonder Woman. In Don Heck: A Work Of Art, author John Coates has meticulously researched and chronicled information on Don’s storied 40-year career, including his time at DC, Dell, Gold Key, and as “ghost” artist on Lee Falk’s The Phantom newspaper strip. From personal recollections from Don’s surviving family, long-time friends, and industry legends, to rare interviews with Heck himself (where he discusses his career, artistic technique, triumphs, frustrations, and love of drawing), this book is full of insight into—and first-hand anecdotes from—the early days of Marvel Comics. It also features an unbiased analysis of sales on Don’s DC Comics titles, an extensive art gallery (including published, unpublished, and pencil artwork), a Foreword by Stan Lee, and an Afterword by Beau Smith. Hailed as one of the fathers of Saturday morning television, Lou Scheimer was the co-founder of Filmation Studios, which for over 25 years provided animated excitement for TV and film. Scheimer's company created the first DC cartoons with Superman, Batman, and Aquaman and swung into high adventure with Tarzan, The Lone Ranger, and Zorro. Forays into live-action included Shazam! and The Secrets of Isis, and in the 1980s, Filmation single-handedly caused the syndication explosion with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and its successors. Now, Lou Scheimer tells the entire story in this book illustrated with photos, model sheets, storyboards, presentation art, and more. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

by John Lowe Professional comic artists interpret scripts every day as they successfully transform the written word into the visual form. Rarely do we get to examine the process that is unique to each artist. Unlike any other 'how-to' book, Working Methods puts the minds of comic artists under the microscope, highlighting the intricacies of the creative process step by step. For this book, three short scripts are each interpreted in different ways by professional comic artists to illustrate the varied ways in which they 'see' and 'solve' the problem of making a script succeed in comic form. The American Comic Book Chronicles continues with this volume about the 'Golden Age' of the comic book industry. It was a time when America's entry into World War II was presaged by the arrival of such patriotic do-gooders as Will Eisner's Uncle Sam, Harry Shorten and Irv Novick's The Shield, and Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Captain America. It was when teenage culture found expression in a fumbling red-haired high school student named Archie Andrews. But most of all, the first five years of the 1940s was the age of the 'packagers' when studios headed by men like Harry A Chesler, Will Eisner, and Jerry Iger churned out material for a plethora of new comic book companies that published the entire gamut of genres, from funny animal stories to crime tales to jungle sagas to science-fiction adventures.
