Ever since a nightmarish bicycle accident, he fears going to school. So, his parents hire him a special tutor—not a man, but a mustachioed pocket watch. He, too, fails to improve Tadashi’s grades, though he gifts him a magical wristwatch capable of transporting its wearer to a frighteningly surreal land ofclockpeople. As the automatons begin to turn on their makers, Tadashi decides that it’s best to abandon his uneasyhumanityand bestow his soul to the ticktocks. Originally published in 1962, Tokunami Seiichiro’sHUMANCLOCKhas no peer or parallel in manga history. Years before it was acceptable to be abstract and oneiric in Japanese comics, years before it was common to cartoon in an artistic manner that privileged form over function, Tokunami was expressionistically slashing through panels in a Kafka-esque fever dream of jagged and melting imagery. Including an equally weird second story, THE CAT’S MOURNING CLOTHES, and an essay by subculturalist Udagawa Takeo,HUMANCLOCKis the ninth volume of SMUDGE, a line of vintage horror, occult, and dark fantasy manga curated and translated by award-winning historian Ryan Holmberg and published by Living the Line (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

From bold experiments, through early takes on his favorite subjects, to self-critiques of his older work, this wide-ranging collection is an essential look at Moore's illuminating short stories. Each story is drawn by some of the best artists in comics from mainstream mavericks like Steven Bissette, Rick Veitch, and John Totleben to underground iconoclasts like Mark Beyer and Peter Bagge. Fire! follows the meteoric rise and fall of Aaron Browning, a troubled and poor Ohio teenager. In juvenile detention, Aaron meets the magnetic delinquent Fire Wolf—a motorcycle-riding rebel with an extraordinary musical talent. Their intense bond awakens a fiery passion for music in Aaron. Aaron moves to Detroit’s gritty factories and underground scene, where he forms the band Fire! to channel his emotions, rebellion, and raw energy. As fame explodes, he plunges into the era’s excesses—sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll, Vietnam-era shadows—embodying the intoxicating yet destructive pursuit of freedom. Fire! immerses the reader in the turbulent late 1960s. A fascinating peek at the vibrant American rock music scene of the time. Aaron, inspired by Scott Walker, blazes across the pages, colliding with iconic personalities and legendary bands of the era. The collection also includes a short comic on Pink Floyd. Created by Hideko Mizuno, a trailblazing shojo pioneer mentored by Osamu Tezuka and a Tokiwa-so resident, Fire! broke new ground: one of the first shojo series with a male lead, featuring sex scenes that challenged post-WWII taboos and explored mature themes of desire, identity, and countercultural rebellion. Inspired by Scott Walker, Aaron is a flawed, hedonistic, and charismatic anti-hero. Fire! in English is long overdue. Classic shojo manga has been almost entirely absent from the English localization wave of the last two decades — a blind spot that has left anglophone readers without access to key works that shaped the medium. Mizuno is the acknowledged forerunner of the Year 24 Group. The artists — Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya, Riyoko Ikeda — are already familiar to all American Manga fans. Fire! is the missing ancestor. The Rabagoo Race, the most famous boat race in the world, sees contestants face certain death throughout its frantic stages, all in the impossible hopes of reaching that mythical finish line, and winning everything their hearts desire. Only three ships have survived the 100 brutal stages of boat racing. Having fought mega sea monsters, riptide hell storms, and whip smart competitors, they must now face each other in the final sprint to the finish line. Does the humble sailboat the Boulie Bear have what it takes to beat the Slick Van Vex and the Indestructible Solid Slope? The Rabagoo Race is the first graphic novel by the mononymous Garresh, a young Scottish artist who leverages complex gallery-worthy abstraction and impeccable color and figurative work into comic pages of unsettling power. This debut puts Garresh square in the center of an international graphic tradition that stretches from Moebius to Cam Kennedy to contemporaries like Linnea Sterte, Taiyo Matsumoto, and beyond. Dash Shaw is one of the most restless cartoonists of recent decades, constantly evolving in how he approaches the comics page. In the years since his breakthrough graphic novel Bottomless Belly Button, he has continued to create acclaimed, idiosyncratic comics, varying his uses of line and color as well as shifting from domestic realism to sci-fi farce to historical fiction. But some concerns in Shaw's work remain constant. In New Realities, critic Greg Hunter (The Comics Journal) follows the through-line across this adventurous body of work. (immagine) Categoria: Comics

In 2004, Julia Wertz began a series of funny, irreverent autobiographical comics she called The Fart Party. After posting these comics online to acclaim and controversy, she eventually started collecting these comics as self-published minis which found their way to Atomic Books in Baltimore, who thought they ought to be collected into a proper book. As these things go, the first volume was so successful, there was a second volume. Both are now out of print, but Museum of Mistakes collects them into one book, plus numerous pages of Julia's early comic work, unpublished and/or previously uncollected comics, short stories, illustrations, process pages, hate mail, sketchbook pages, tear stains and more.
