The 1950s was dubbed 'the decade of possibilities,' the frontiers of space became the new wild west as authors, film directors and musicians alike became inspired by the likelihood of man exploring space. As early as 1951, 20th Century Fox commissioned The Day The Earth Stood Still, the film that according to the posters 'started it all.' The soundtrack would be as important to the film's overall impact as any other facet of the production. Bought in was seasoned movie score composer Bernard Herrmann, famed for his work with Orson Welles. Disc 2 of this set features the work of Louis & Bebe Barron, famed for their pioneering work in the electronic field. MGM bought them in to write the music for their ambitious 1956 production The Forbidden Planet, and in so doing were rewarded with a score that to this day sounds futuristic and eminently listenable.
