Kevin Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Jay and Silent Bob also appeared in Smith's later films Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022), which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. His original graphic novel, Barbarian Lord, was published in 2014 and reviewed favorably by Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, which called it a Game of Thrones for younger readers. Smith is also known for creating album cover art and concert posters for Minibosses and as a contributor to FORTY-3, the official Massachusetts College of Art comic journal. Shirow Masamune was born in 1961 in Kobe, Japan and attended Osaka University of Arts, where his fellow classmates included Hideaki Anno, the future creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Shirow began his professional manga career in 1985 with Appleseed, which won one of Japan’s top prizes for science fiction, the Seiun Award. Dark Horse first began to publish Shirow’s work in 1992, beginning with his art book Intron Depot and manga Orion and Dominion, followed in 1995 with the first English edition of his most famous manga series, Ghost in the Shell. In 1996, Shirow was the first manga artist to be featured on the cover of Wizard: The Guide to Comics. He was the character designer for the classic 1980s cyberpunk saga Bubblegum Crisis, and in the 1990s for Otaku no Video, the anime from legendary studio Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion) that popularized the term “otaku.” In 2024, Kenichi Sonoda was given the prestigious Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic-Con.Gunsmith Cats is Sonoda’s longest manga series, making its original 1991 debut in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine, home of such stories as Vinland Saga, Blade of the Immortal, Oh My Goddess! and Wandering Island.
