On the Death Queen Island where he was trained, Ikki witnessed the death of Esmeralda, a young woman he fell in love with during his training, and the death happened because of his failure. Esmeralda's death, along with Guilty's indifferent attitude, sparked his hatred for everything and everyone, driving him into a fury that led him to kill his master and obtain the Phoenix Armor. Ikki commanded the Black Saints in a quest for revenge but later regretted it and began to fight for the goddess Athena, helping his friends and brother whenever necessary. He was the first antagonist of the series but later became a powerful ally.
