esempio: @author Stan Lee
esempio: @artist John Romita
Jr.
@cover copertinista: cerca solo articoli di questo
copertinista. Per esempio: @cover Alex
Ross
@artista, @editore, @titolo (mentre @cover rimane uguale!)
grammaticalmente simili (Man/Men ad esempio).
articoli presentanti negli ultimi 30 / 90 giorni mentre @mese a quelli
presentati nel mese in corso e @YEAR all'ultimo anno (inteso come "gli
ultimi 365 giorni).
codice a barre.

The recipient of a 2000 MacArthur fellowship, Ben Katchor (b. 1951) is a beloved comics artist with a career spanning four decades. Published in indie weeklies across the United States, his comics are known for evoking the sensorium of the modern metropolis. In some of his early strips published in the 1980s in the New York Press and Forward, Katchor introduced one of his quintessential characters, Julius Knipl, a real estate photographer. By crafting Knipl as an urban flâneur prone to wandering, Katchor was able to variously demonstrate his absurd humor and linguistic whimsy alongside narratives packed with social critique. Rooted in close analyses of the artist's numerous series and collections, each chapter in Ben Katchor is dedicated to a distinct aspect of the urban experience. (W/A) Matt Murray The Smurfs began as Les Schtroumpfs in a Belgian comic strip in October 1958 and quickly gained popularity, launching comic books and classic figurines. But it wasn't until the NBC cartoon that American audiences fell in love with the Smurfs. The show ran from 1981 to 1989, and fans can still watch episodes twice a day on Cartoon Network's Boomerang channel. And now, the Smurfs are back in town, thanks to the upcoming movie. The World of Smurfs delves into the history of the series' characters and profiles the creator, Peyo. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

The Life and Comics of Howard Cruse tells the remarkable story of how a self-described 'preacher's kid' from Birmingham, Alabama, became the so-called 'Godfather of Gay Comics.' This study showcases a remarkable fifty-year career that included working in the 1970s underground comics scene, becoming founding editor of the groundbreaking anthology series Gay Comix, and publishing the graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby, partially based on his own experience of coming of age in the Civil Rights era. Through his exploration of Cruse's life and work, Andrew J. Kunka also chronicles the dramatic ways that gay culture changed over the course of Cruse's lifetime, from Cold War-era homophobia to the gay liberation movement to the AIDS crisis to the legalization of gay marriage. Highlighting Cruse's skills as a trenchant satirist and social commentator, Kunka explores how he cast a queer look at American politics, mainstream comics culture, and the gay community's own norms. Lavishly illustrated with a broad selection of comics from Cruse's career, this study serves as a perfect introduction to this pioneering cartoonist, as well as an insightful read for fans who already love how his work sketched a new vision of gay life. From their inception in 1935, comic books - starring Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel - had been primarily written for and aimed at adolescents. There were always the occasional outlier artists who pushed back against the commercial constraints of comic books and envisioned the next evolutionary artistic leap in the artform: Charles Biro was one of those artists. In 1949, the ambitious Biro - who had previously co-created the realistically brutal comic Crime Does Not Pay- edited and wrote an oversized comic aimed at adults, called Tops. Like several other radical adult comics projects that would follow, it proved to be a commercial failure and lasted only two Life magazine-sized issues. The original comics have since become a legendary holy grail among comics fans and historians, fetching as much as $6,000 on the collector's market: written about but rarely seen and never reprinted. Until now. Fantagraphics' Tops collects both issues of these oversized experimental comics in their entirety. Some of the best craftsmen working in comics at that time drew these pulpy, sexy, and melodramatic stories: Dan Barry, George Tuska, and others. It includes two stunning pre-EC crime tales illustrated by Reed Crandall, reminiscent of his Crime SuspenStories work. Actor Melvyn Douglas (believe it or not) takes the reader on a tour of utopia, entitled 'How Would You Live Under A World Government?' - a positive spin on global Socialism! A treasure trove of fascinating and revelatory comics history for scholars and fans, this compilation includes an introduction by the editor, the historian and cartoonist Michael T. Gilbert, as well as several other essays providing background on the creation of the series and the publisher, editors, and cartoonists who realized it. It includes a chronicle in essay form of experimental, adult comics endeavors throughout the first half of the 20th century. Tops is a landmark work of historical importance and a mind-boggling reading experience from a bygone era meticulously restored and reproduced in a deluxe hardcover in its originally published dimensions. Jack Kirby Collector #85 brings to life 'Kirby: Animated', detailing how Kirby and his concepts leaped from celluloid, to paper, and back again! From his 1930s start on Popeye and Betty Boop and his work being used on the 1960s Marvel Super-Heroes show, to Fantastic Four (in both 1967 and 1978), Super Friends/Super Powers, Scooby-Doo, Thundarr the Barbarian, and Ruby-Spears: it's the ultimate look at Jack's work in, and influence on, animation! Then comics and animation's Evan Dorkin talks about his Kirby inspirations and an abandoned Kamandi animated series. This 'What If Kirby...?' issue takes a trip through alternate timelines to discern what might've happened if Jack hadn't been stopped cold in his attempts at revolutionizing comics. We'll consider his ill-fated Speak-Out Series of upscale magazines, DC's abandonment of the Fourth World, his original rejected Spider-Man presentation, Fredric Wertham's effect on Mainline Comics, and even the CIA's involvement with the Lord of Light project! Had things been different, how would Jack's career and output have changed? Plus, Tom Kraft discusses his journey to create and build the 'What If Kirby' website, and teaming with favorite Kirby inkers (including Royer, Sinnott, and Ayers) to produce reimagined Kirby artwork. Also, there's a rare Kirby interview, Mark Evanier and our other regular columnists, a classic Simon & Kirby story, a deluxe gallery of Kirby pencil art, and more! A celebration of quintessential 1970s writer/editor Denny O'Neil is the centerpiece of CBC #35, featuring an in-depth look at his life, work, and legacy, focusing on the era of relevant comics - from the fabled Green Lantern/Green Arrow series to the mod, mini-skirted Wonder Woman - that brought comics into the modern age. Plus, Bob Levin examines the roller-coaster life and chaotic career of George Caragonne, from his start as Jim Shooter protege at kiddie Star Comics to becoming the drug-fueled helmsman of Penthouse Comix, plunging off a Times Square hotel to his death at age 29. Also, part one of a career-spanning interview with Arnold Drake, co-creator of The Doom Patrol and Deadman. Plus we visit with Jack Butterworth (Warren horror mag writer and comics historian), chat with alternative cartoonist Tim Hensley, and of course, the great Fred Hembeck's latest 'Dateline' feature is here too!
