Continua la sua attività di fumettista con la casa editrice Acme, lavorando, in contemporanea, come grafico pubblicitario. Nel 1989 inizia a collaborare stabilmente con la Sergio Bonelli Editore lavorando alla prima stagione di Nathan Never e, a partire dal 1995, entrando stabilmente nello staff di Dylan Dog. Nei primi anni Novanta, Nicola Mari presta il proprio segno anche per le case editrici Glamour International, Glittering Images, e per le Edizioni Scarabeo.
