Così scriveva Emilio Salgari nell’ultima lettera ai suoi editori poco prima di togliersi la vita cent’anni fa, il 25 aprile 1911 a Torino. Una fine amara e tragica, per lo scrittore padre della narrativa popolare d’avventura, capace come nessuno di accendere la fantasia di più generazioni, ma sempre sottovalutato e sfruttato in vita. Paolo Bacilieri, uno degli autori più originali e stilisticamente innovativi della scena italiana, ha dedicato a Salgari come affettuoso omaggio una biografia a fumetti. In questa nuova edizione a tre anni dalla prima uscita, oltre a presentare una nuova copertina, il graphic novel è arricchito da una ventina di pagine extra scritte e disegnate da Bacilieri per raccontare un altro episodio della vita di Salgari, ai tempi in cui lo scrittore lavorava al romanzo “Sandokan alla riscossa”: l’autore rende omaggio al talento e all’inventiva di Alberto Della Valle, l’artista napoletano che illustrò tantissimi libri di Salgari, e ci regala un gustoso “dietro le quinte” sul mondo dell’editoria di inizio ‘900. “Diceva Roald Dahl: bisogna essere pazzi per fare gli scrittori. La sola compensazione di questo mestiere è un’assoluta libertà. Vale senz’altro anche per Salgari”. _ Paolo Bacilieri Nelle pagine di Sweet Salgari non si trovano i mondi esotici, Sandokan e i pirati della Malesia, il Corsaro Nero e i mari caraibici, ma lo scrittore e l’uomo con moglie e quattro figli che inventò e raccontò tutto questo senza mai muoversi da casa. Inseguito dalle scadenze, spremuto e sottopagato da editori che gli imponevano per contratto quattro romanzi l’anno, estraneo ai “salotti buoni” della letteratura perché considerato all’epoca scrittore-intrattenitore di serie B. Ecco il Salgari che Bacilieri racconta: “Un travet dell’avventura – dice l’autore – dalla vita piccolo borghese e agrodolce: forse il primo scrittore ad essere schiacciato dai ritmi della produzione industriale. Coi baffi a manubrio, il cappello a paglietta e la perenne sigaretta in bocca era lui stesso più personaggio dei suoi personaggi. Lo vedo un po’ come un bisnonno, un antenato di tutti noi che continuiamo a fare oggi questo mestiere di narratori a metà tra realtà e fantasia sfrenata”. “Attraverso storie in bilico tra il metaforico e un fantastico quotidiano, Bacilieri ci avverte sulla precarietà e la complessità del vivere contemporaneo”. _ Festival BilBolBul Con il ritratto dello scrittore, troviamo in Sweet Salgari quello delle sue città e della sua epoca: di Verona, dove era nato, della Torino belle epoque e dell’Italia in cui visse. Un’Italia post-unitaria e non eroica, a cavallo tra Otto e Novecento, in mezzo al guado tra il grande slancio ideale del Risorgimento e l’imminente bagno di sangue della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Su questo sfondo, tra queste architetture disegnate da Bacilieri con straordinario lavoro di ricerca e precisione di dettagli, si compie la parabola di Salgari. Un maestro di fantasia. Un inventore di eroi che si schierò sempre con i ribelli e i perdenti. Il protagonista di un’intensa, toccante vicenda umana che ci fa riflettere sulla soglia tra immaginazione e realtà. (immagine)
