Writer/artist Jeremy Haun is a prolific, fan-favorite comic book writer and artist who has worked with numerous publishers and characters, ranging from Batman to Captain America to Spawn, in a career spanning 20-plus years. He is best known for creator-owned properties such as The Beauty and The Realm published by Image Comics, and The Red Mother and The Approach, both from BOOM! Studios. He is creative director of Ignition Press and the host of the video podcast Curious Haunts. Jason A. Hurley has been in comic book retail for over two decades, but The Beauty was his first foray into making his own. In addition to comic books, he loves pro wrestling, bad horror movies, Freddie Mercury, hummingbirds, his parents, and pizza. While he’s never actually tried it, he also thinks curling looks like a hell of a lot of fun. Hurley claims his personal heroes are Earl Bassett and Valentine McKee, because they live a life of adventure on their own terms. He also claims that he would brain anyone who showed even the most remote signs of becoming a cannibalistic undead bastard, including his own brother, without a second thought. He’s lived in Joplin, Missouri, for most of his life, and never plans to leave. A former biotechnology researcher, Ema Lupacchino transitioned into comics and has worked on several Italian series, including L'insonne. Alongside her work as a comic book artist, she also illustrated role-playing game manuals. In the North American market, she has worked for many of the major publishers including Marvel, DC, IDW, Dark Horse, Image, and Dynamite on titles that include Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, Star Trek/Doctor Who, and X-Factor among many others. Throughout her career she has contributed designs, illustrations, and concepts for statues, action figures, theme park graphics, and media promotional campaigns. She was most recently the artist on World’s Finest: Teen Titans and Shazam! with Mark Waid.

Questi versi, tratti dalla canzone Hero, ben si prestano a spiegare cosa spinga gli uomini a compiere gesta che possono poi venire considerate eroiche: l’altruismo, ma soprattutto la voglia di agire, di non farsi sopraffare dalle avversità nell’attesa di essere salvati. è proprio quanto accade al protagonista di I am a hero, manga horror metanarrativo dal forte impatto visivo, che siamo orgogliosi di riproporre al pubblico italiano nell’edizione speciale per la celebrazione della vittoria nella categoria generale della 58a edizione del prestigioso premio Shogakukan. Prima opera di Kengo Hanazawa a essere portata in Italia, I am a hero, dopo gli ottimi successi in patria di Ressentiment e Boys on the run, consacra definitivamente l’autore come uno dei più significativi esponenti dell’attuale panorama fumettistico nipponico. Serializzato sulla rivista seinen Big Comic Spirits di Shogakukan dall’aprile 2009, è stato anche finalista per tre edizioni consecutive (2010-2012) del premio Taisho. Hideo Suzuki, trentacinque anni, è un assistente mangaka insoddisfatto della propria vita e ormai disilluso delle proprie aspirazioni. Convinto di essere un fallito che non vedrà mai serializzata una propria storia, riceve un rifiuto dopo l’altro, avvilendosi nel vedere le sue speranze svanire in un mondo che, a detta sua, non lo comprende. Le sue giornate trascorrono tra il lavoro che non lo gratifica e i suoi soliloqui, spesso fatti ad alta voce, che lo fanno apparire come una persona disturbata. E in effetti Hideo presenta i comportamenti di una persona con tratti psicotici: ha allucinazioni, sbraita in mezzo alla strada e ha pure un amico immaginario, Yajima, un buffo ometto tarchiatello dall’aspetto infantile. Vedere le proprie aspettative e i propri sogni infrangersi contro la realtà, non riuscire a realizzare quel manga che possa consacrarlo come “eroe” del fumetto, la gelosia per i colleghi e l’insicurezza nei propri mezzi si riflettono anche nella vita privata e nel rapporto burrascoso con la sua ragazza, Tetsuko, anche lei disegnatrice disadattata, croce e delizia del protagonista che tanto la desidera quanto crede di non meritarla. “Un manga interessante è quello creato da una persona con una vita interessante” gli viene detto un giorno, quando per l’ennesima volta un suo manga (che mescola moe e agricoltura!) viene bocciato. È davvero così? La vita di Hideo è così triste e piatta? Una sera, mentre sta rincasando, gli capita di assistere a un incidente. Un taxi investe una donna che, come se nulla fosse, nonostante il collo rotto, si alza e riprende a camminare. Sono ancora le sue allucinazioni? Perennemente in bilico tra uno stato di coscienza e di delirio, Hideo ora non sa più se credere a ciò che vede o se pensare che tutto sia frutto della sua immaginazione. Pochi giorni dopo, Hideo va a trovare la fidanzata malata, che trova mutata nell’aspetto e nel carattere: la ragazza è inaspettatamente aggressiva e, novella zombie, tenta di addentarlo. Cos’è successo a Tetsuko? E cosa sta accadendo al mondo intero, dove persone apparentemente normali tutto a un tratto si trasformano in feroci bestie? Il primo volume è assolutamente geniale. Di primo acchito sembrerebbe un classico seinen del tipo tranche de vie, focalizzato sulla figura di un perdente, dall’aspetto tutt’altro che piacevole, e sui suoi insuccessi; potrebbe anche sembrare una storia di stampo psicologico, incentrata su un protagonista bloccato in un monologo perpetuo e preda di visioni. Eppure, sotto traccia, l’autore riesce a mandare dei segnali che lasciano intendere che un cambio di passo repentino sia imminente, tenendo alta la curiosità fino all’esplosione morbosa e violenta della componente orrorifica. Una serie unica, che spinge per ottenere fin da ora il proprio posto nell’Olimpo dei manga. Siamo sicuri che nessun lettore rimarrà indifferente davanti a quest’opera. (immagine) Annullato/esaurito
