Ikki mandala letteralmente significa “Il mandala di Ikki”, con riferimento a Kita Ikki, soprannome di Terujirô Kita (1883-1937), intellettuale e politico nazionalista giapponese che compare come personaggio nella seconda parte dell’opera; diversamente scritto può significare anche “Il mandala della rivolta”. I capitoli di questo primo volume, comparsi per la prima volta su "Manga Shonen" nel 1974, sono ambientati nella Cina dei primordi del XX secolo, attraversata dalla serie di sollevazioni contadine e urbane culminate nei sanguinosi massacri di stranieri e cristiani perpetrati dallo Yihetuan (Unione per la giustizia e la concordia), nelle cui effigi figurava quel pugno chiuso dal quale derivò il nome di “Rivolta dei Boxer”, invalso nell’opinione pubblica mondiale all’epoca dell’invio congiunto di forze armate giapponesi, russe, tedesche, inglesi, francesi, italiane, austro-ungariche e statunitensi le quali, accorse in difesa delle rispettive legazioni sotto assedio, la annientarono. È in questo scenario storico che viene catapultata la giovane Sanniang, contadina povera e senza famiglia, unitasi alle truppe dei boxer durante la sua fuga da un misero villaggio cinese in seguito all’uccisione di un funzionario imperiale dal quale aveva subìto vessazioni e maltrattamenti continui. Diffidente, ingenua, irascibile e, in molte circostanze, tremendamente violenta, ma anche passionale e incline alle infatuazioni, con la sua irresistibile simpatia, il personaggio di Sanniang, nelle sue peregrinazioni tra Cina e Giappone, fornisce una chiave di lettura drammatica e ironica per quel difficile quadro storico.
