John Polidori (1795–1821) was born in London to an Italian immigrant father and English mother. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduated at the age of just nineteen, and in 1816 became physician to Lord Byron. He accompanied Byron on a tour through Europe, famously spending the summer at the Villa Diodati in Switzerland where they regularly met with the poet Percy Shelley, his partner Mary Godwin (later Shelley), and her half-sister Claire Clairmont. It was here that Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein was inspired, influenced in part by Polidori’s conversation and behavior—as recorded in Polidori’s diary. Although Polidori’s fractious relationship with Byron led them to part ways, they remained on cordial terms until the publication of Polidori’s tale ‘The Vampyre’ in 1819, which was willfully misattributed to Byron by the publisher Henry Colburn. Polidori was attempting to realize his literary ambitions by publishing ‘The Vampyre’, extracts from his diary, a volume of drama and poetry, and a novel begun at Diodati (Ernestus Berchthold; or, The Modern Œdipus). However, the controversy surrounding ‘The Vampyre’ sank his writing career and he published little else. He died by his own hand in 1821.Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was born in Dublin to staunch Protestant parents descended from French Huguenots. He studied law at Trinity College Dublin, and while he maintained a somewhat desultory legal practice after graduating, his chief energies were directed towards fiction and journalism. He published his first novel, the historical adventure The Cock and the Anchor, in 1845, and edited a number of newspapers during his lifetime—notably the Dublin University Magazine, in which he serialized his own stories and, despite his Irish nationalist tory sympathies, took a relaxed editorial line. He found his distinctive authorial voice in mysteries and thrillers such as The House by the Church-Yard (1861–3), Wylder’s Hand (1863–4), and Uncle Silas (1864), and in his collections of uncanny and supernatural tales—most famously In a Glass Darkly (1872)—which are often haunted by Irish politics and history. Known as ‘The Invisible Prince’ in Dublin due to his solitary and nocturnal lifestyle, Le Fanu died a recluse in 1873.

Writer/artist Larry Hama got his start as a penciler before becoming a respected editor and later a writer during the ’80s with his career-defining work on G.I. Joe and a memorable run on Wolverine. Through the years, Hama proved his versatility writing Avengers, Blaze, Elektra, Generation X, The Punisher: War Zone and multiple Venom miniseries. When Devil’s Due, IDW and Image Comics in turn obtained the G.I. Joe license, Hama revisited his iconic Marvel run, continuing where he had left off years earlier and bringing the series to — and past — a record-breaking three hundred issues. At Continuity Comics, he created Bucky O’Hare, launching a franchise that extended to animation, video games and a toy line. Hama recently revisited his era helming the adventures of Logan with the Wolverine: Patch limited series.After beginning his writing career on DC horror titles, David Michelinie moved to Marvel. He and co-writer/inker Bob Layton established Iron Man’s battle with alcoholism, use of specialized armor variants and vendetta against Doctor Doom, as well as other aspects of the character that endure to this day. Michelinie’s unique blend of action, suspense and humor distinguished not only Iron Man, but also Amazing Spider-Man. With artist Todd McFarlane, he introduced the vicious vigilante Venom; he also wrote the first Venom limited series, Lethal Protector. Marjorie Liu is a former lawyer turned New York Times-bestselling author most famous for her Dirk & Steele and Hunter Kiss series of romance novels. A diehard comics fan, her first foray in the medium produced the NYX series No Way Home. Subsequent credits include Black Widow, X-23 and Daken: Dark Wolverine (with Daniel Way); she has also written the novel X-Men: Dark Mirror.Writer Daniel Way has been one of Marvel’s most prolific and influential writers, making a career of crafting defining stories for some of the House of Ideas’ most popular characters. He is best known for lengthy runs on Ghost Rider and Deadpool, and took a turn at Marvel’s most deadly father-son team in Wolverine: Origins and Dark Wolverine (co-written with Marjorie Liu). Evan Dorkin is an American comics artist and writer. His most well-known works are the comic books Milk and Cheese and Dork. His comics often poke fun at fandom, even while making it clear that Dorkin is a fan himself. As well as his comics work, Dorkin has also written for animation, including (with his wife Sarah Dyer, also a comics writer/artist) Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. He also wrote and produced Bring me the Head of Boba Fett, an animated television pilot for Adult Swim called Welcome to Eltingville, based on his own characters. Dorkin and Dyer also wrote some episodes of the Superman animated series, particularly the episode "Live Wire," which introduced a new character of the same name. Additionally, the pair contributed to the script of the 2006 English-language version of the anime Shin Chan. After an initial six-episode order proved successful, more episodes were ordered, but Dorkin and Dyer are no longer working on the series. Dorkin has been the recipient of several Eisner Awards, including 2002's Best Writer/Artist: Humor.
