Questa antologia di storie brevi, in parte commissionate dallo scrittore Dave Eggers per la rivista Esquire e pubblicate per la prima volta nel 1998, delinea già i temi dei successivi graphic novel che hanno portato Clowes al successo internazionale: Mona Beadle anticipa le scatenate adolescenti di Ghost World, il fumetto diventato film con Scarlett Johansson e candidato all’Oscar, con la sceneggiatura dello stesso Clowes e la regia di Terry Zwigoff. Con questa galleria di Caricature l’autore mette in scena il fallimento del sogno americano e racconta le storie dietro “le facce disperate della gente normale che incontri ogni giorno nella metropolitana”.
