(W/A) David Collier Since publishing his first story in R. Crumb's Weirdo magazine, David Collier has been known for his thoughtful comic essays. Chimo is an account of Collier's decision to re-enlist in the Canadian army and go through basic training again at age 40, leaving his new family behind. He intends to get to Afghanistan and follow in the footsteps of artists who produced a body of work while serving in the Canadian War Artists Program. It is a poignant account of aging and mortality but, in true Collier fashion, digresses into scenes of jumping rope and the story of his childhood hero, skier 'Jackrabbit' Johannsen. Daria Bogdanska moves to Malmö to attend art school, sets out to find a job, and discovers that in order to work in the country legally, she needs a Swedish personal identity number. But there is a catch: she can't get one without securing a job first. To make ends meet, Daria starts working under the table at an Indian restaurant. There, she discovers another level of inequity: lacking regulation, the underground job market is forcing immigrants to settle for a substandard quality of life. She sparks a legal battle that ultimately leads to fairer work practices for the people in her community. Wage Slaves is the autobiographical story of Daria Bogdanska's determined struggle to build a life in Malmö, and how she found a way to succeed, against all odds. When COVID-19 hit Montreal, cartoonist Rick Trembles started The Weakly Dispatch, a series of diary comics offering his personal perspective on pandemic life. Trembles' asthma put him at risk of a serious infection so, like many others, he took careful measures to avoid coming into contact with the virus. He self-isolated for months, surviving on grocery deliveries from friends, DIY workouts (to prevent muscle atrophy), and of course, comics. Leaving the apartment, however, turned out to be even harder than staying isolated. Initially foiled by stair-painters and coughing neighbors, Trembles quickly discovered a newly perilous world, populated by unmasked people and handshake enthusiasts. D. Boyd takes an unflinching look back at a 1970s childhood plagued by insecurity, bullying, and family dysfunction. After starting a small town fried chicken franchise her war-vet father becomes even more emotionally inaccessible at home, and nothing Dawn does is ever good enough for her mother. School isn't much better being filled with constant social challenges. Dawn's a true underdog-and this is the story of how she learns to find the good in the bad, and that fitting in isn't all it's cracked up to be. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

'The wide open prairie, the domestication of garden gnomes, the psychoanalytic breakdown of 8-bit video games; into these and other subjects Dakota McFadzean digs with his pen and brush, unearthing truths that discomfit even as they entertain. This collection of his best work to date mashes cuteness into cruelty, hope into resignation, and life into death, leaving us with one slow-burning ball of phosphorescent comics.' - Jason Lutes (Berlin) (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Towerkind is an oblique end-of-the-world story seen through the eyes of a diverse group of children in Toronto's St James Town, a neighbourhood of densely populated high rise apartments. When Lester LaFleur's relationship is upended by a breakup with his girlfriend, he decides to leave the city for good. With his guitar on his back and cowboy boots on his feet, Lester heads west across Canada, playing his hurtin' songs in empty taverns and to anyone who cares to listen. As Lester travels across the country, he meets others who appreciate his music and share his experiences-and develops a deep kinship with his fellow drifters. As they ride together toward their unknown fortunes, adventures ensue. Cartoonist Lorenz Peters uses gentle humour and expressive lines to explore the lifestyle of a travelling musician-and discovers that sometimes, home is the open road and family is the people you meet along the way. An adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel. Unlike the common cliché of Kafka's work, Amerika is not a dark and sinister novel, but a dynamic and colourful story, with a touch of absurdist humor. It tells the story of the young immigrant Karl Rossmann who, after an embarrassing sexual misadventure, finds himself 'packed off to America' by his parents. Expected to redeem himself in this magical land of opportunity, young Karl is swept up instead in a whirlwind of dizzying reversals, strange escapades, and picaresque adventures. Godbout's first work in English uses the clear line aesthetic he perfected in his series Red Ketchup. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Growing up in Haines Junction, YT, artist Cole Pauls performed in a traditional song and dance group called the Dakwäkãda Dancers. During that time, Pauls encountered the ancestral language of Southern Tutchone. Driven by a desire to help revitalize the language, he created Dakwäkãda Warriors, a bilingual comic about two earth protectors saving the world from evil pioneers and cyborg sasquatches. Pauls' Elders supported him throughout the creation process by offering consultation and translation. The resulting work is a whimsical young adult graphic novel that offers an accessible allegory of colonialism. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Henriette Valium has been called the greatest French-Canadian cartoonist of all time. He's become a regular in almost every independent zine, compilation and catalogue in North America and Europe. Yet he has never had an original graphic novel published in English, until now! His style is like the bastard love child of S. Clay Wilson and Derf Backderf as raised by French avant-garde collective Le Dernier Cri. The Palace of Champions is a historical document, finally bringing to light this underground legend. It includes an introduction and interview to give context for Valium's long career and expansive body of work. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The first graphic novel from a founding father of the Quebec comix underground. A poignant account of an alcoholic father who drags his family into misfortune, The Vagabond Valise is the heart-breaking autobiographical story of Siris, represented by his chicken-headed alter ego. Siris paints a sincere and poetic portrait of a troubled childhood spent in and out of foster homes, and the working-class, post-war Quebec where it took place. Winner of the Quebec Graphic Novel of the Year. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

David Collier's latest graphic novel explores his involvement in the cultural landscape of Toronto in the 1970s and 80s, specifically focusing on the life of Gary Topp, a concert promoter and founder of the pioneering Canadian repertory cinema. Topp emerged from an immigrant background, abandoned the family textile business, and became an influential figure in the lives of an entire community. Though outspoken and opinionated, Topp inspired love and devotion, not only in those who worked for him, but also in the acts he booked-including the Ramones, The Police, and the Dixie Chicks.
