Ma grazie alla sua insistenza, Stan strappò a Martin Goodman il consenso a dare una chance al suo improbabile eroe in Amazing Fantasy, una serie destinata alla chiusura. Con l’Uomo Ragno in copertina, l’albo numero 15 schizzò ai vertici della classifica dei best-seller Marvel di quell’anno. Il resto è storia. Amazing Spider-Man, che fece il suo debutto sette mesi più tardi, rompeva gli schemi. Peter Parker viveva nel poco elegante quartiere del Queens, era sempre al verde, si preoccupava continuamente della zia Mary, non aveva successo in amore e riceveva costantemente dei rimproveri dal suo capo, l’editore del Daily Bugle J. Jonah Jameson. L’Uomo Ragno possedeva l’arguzia e la sicurezza che mancavano a Parker, ma imparare a usare i suoi poteri non risultava sempre così semplice. Spesso sembrava sull’orlo della sconfitta contro la galleria di classici cattivi che fecero la loro comparsa nei primi due anni: l’Avvoltoio, il dottor Octopus, l’Uomo Sabbia, Lizard, Electro, Kraven il Cacciatore, Mysterio e Goblin. Spider-Man deve gran parte del proprio successo al co-creatore e disegnatore Steve Ditko, che era particolarmente abile nel ritrarre gli adolescenti e i loro problemi. I suoi disegni davano all’Uomo Ragno flessibilità ed energia e, mentre tutti avevano paura dei ragni, Ditko fece del volteggiare appesi a una ragnatela tra i palazzi di New York l’avventura più straordinaria mai raccontata fino ad allora. Il sogno di tutti i collezionisti in formato XXL, vicino alle dimensioni delle opere d’arte originali, presenta le prime 21 storie del lancia-ragnatele più famoso del mondo pubblicate dal 1962 al 1964. Invece di ricolorare l’opera originale (come per le ristampe dei fumetti classici dei decenni precedenti), la casa editrice ha tentato di offrire una rappresentazione ideale di questi libri così come erano stati prodotti al momento della pubblicazione. I primi e più prestigiosi albi originali sono stati aperti e fotografati in collaborazione con Marvel e con la Certified Guaranty Comics per essere riprodotti. Ogni pagina è stata fotografata come era stata stampata più di mezzo secolo fa, quindi rimasterizzata digitalmente con moderne tecniche di fotoritocco per correggere i problemi dovuti alle tecniche di stampa imprecise e poco costose dell’epoca, ed è come se fosse uscita da una stamperia di prim’ordine degli anni ’60. Tre diversi tipi di carta, tra cui una uso mano priva di cellulosa, sono stati realizzati appositamente per questa serie per simulare la sensazione dei libri originali. Con un approfondito saggio storico del curatore editoriale di Marvel Ralph Macchio, un’introduzione del super collezionista David Mandell e tavole originali, fotografie rare e altre perle, queste 698 pagine di meravigliose scorribande sui muri solleticheranno il senso di ragno di tutti gli appassionati.
