While working at a convenience store in Leonardo, New Jersey, Kevin Smith wrote and directed Clerks, a low-budget independent film financed in part by the sale of his own comic-book collection. Clerks went on to become the surprise indie hit of 1994, grossing more than $1 million and earning Smith a distribution deal with Miramax. Since Clerks, Smith has written and directed more than a half-dozen hit movies — including Chasing Amy, Mallrats, Jersey Girl, Dogma and Clerks 2. A lifelong comics fan, Smith jumped at the opportunity to adapt his Clerks movie characters into a comic-book series for Oni Press, writing Clerks: The Comic Book and a four-issue Jay and Silent Bob miniseries. In 1998, Smith’s longtime friendship with newly appointed Marvel Knights editors Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti led to his critically acclaimed eight-issue run on Daredevil — garnering Smith a Wizard Fan Award, a Harvey Award and an Eagle Award for Best Writer. Smith followed up his debut with a successful revamp of the original Green Arrow for DC Comics in a story hailed as “exhilarating†by Entertainment Weekly. Smith also scripted another famous Marvel icon with Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do. Smith lives in the Hollywood Hills with his wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Harley.David Mack submitted his first Kabuki collection while still in college as his senior writing thesis. (He got an A on the project.) Combining innovative storytelling, painting techniques and page design, Mack has won nearly every major comic-industry award, including the prestigious Eisner Award for Best Painter, and garnered praise from such luminaries as Jim Steranko and The Washington Times. Marvel fans first witnessed Mack’s stylings when his covers graced the legendary Daredevil storyline “Parts of a Hole,†which he also wrote. A few years after teaming with then-new Daredevil writer Brian Michael Bendis on the “Wake Up†arc, he returned to the title for the “Echo: Vision Quest†storyline, which reintroduced readers to the unique character he created in “Parts of a Hole.†Mack continues to write and illustrate his creator-owned series, New York Times Best Seller Kabuki, now published by Marvel’s Icon imprint, and has been nominated for several Eisner, Kirby and Harvey awards. He is also serving as the visual designer and co-producer on the forthcoming Kabuki feature film. Mack wrote the adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Electric Ant for Marvel, and was nominated for a Writers Guild Award and a Producers Guild Award for his work on Showtime’s Dexter.Classically trained at New York’s prestigious High School of Art and Design, Jimmy Palmiotti began his career as a comic-book inker, gaining a reputation as not only talented, but fast. Collaborating with fellow artist Joe Quesada, Palmiotti lent his skills to such projects as Batman: Sword of Azrael, The Ray and Ninjak. In 1995, Palmiotti and Quesada founded Event Comics, creating the memorable titles Ash and Painkiller Jane. This led to an offer from Marvel Comics to revamp several heroes under the Marvel Knights banner. With writer Kevin Smith and Quesada, Palmiotti’s work on Daredevil became a monumental success. Palmiotti later began to take on comic-book writing chores with a lengthy run on Harley Quinn along with his creator-owned books.Joe Quesada became Marvel’s editor in chief in 2000, instilling an excitement and buzz that had been lacking for years. By 1998, Quesada’s reputation as both artist and publisher led to the founding of Marvel’s groundbreaking Marvel Knights imprint, with Quesada illustrating the flagship book, Daredevil. Marvel Knights’ critical and sales success led to Quesada’s appointment as editor in chief and later chief creative officer.
